Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

"It's not that it's just for black people, but that some things by black artists can be hard for white listeners to relate to because they don't have a similar experience."

I really don't agree with this, at all. I mean, I really, really think that, past a certain point, the things that rappers are talking about are basically universal human emotions. It comes from a different part of life in a lot of ways, but it goes to human themes.

I mean, we're talking about a board that's full of people who can relate to stories about people who can cast spells, about people and aliens flying around on spaceships, about people fighting vampires, about people fighting wars with sword and shield and horse, about all these completely alien things, and finding meaning in them and being able to relate to them. Are you really going to tell me that Notorious BIG is more alien than Spock and Worf? Are you really going to tell me that the world that Nas, or Scarface, or Jay-Z is talking about is more bizarre and difficult to relate to than Homestuck is? Are the things that rappers are talking about really that much more removed from our experience? I find it really difficult to believe that.

I understand what you're saying, but on the other hand, everyone relates to everything differently. Some people might find Show X to be really deep and meaningful to their life and whatnot, but somebody else might find it shallow and trite. There are certainly people of all races and experiences who can find meaning in music, no matter who it's by or its genre, but I think rap/hip-hop, moreso than other genres, end up with this sort of dissonance because some of it is so literal and specific. Sometimes the music isn't meant to be relatable to a wide audience; sometimes particular experiences just can't be related to except by people who've been through the same thing or similar. It's not so much that it's more alien, it's just much more specific and grounded in real experiences that you can't make your own interpretation of it.
