Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

It's also great to see that the general attitude towards rap is that it's only likable if it's been made by white people

I didn't get that impression...? I don't think that people recommending white rappers means that they're dissing black ones. Rap has become a very large and varied genre over the past decade and it is filled with all kinds of people of all races that reaches many demographics.

And I saw that the OP of the rap thread said they didn't want misogynistic rap recs but they didn't say ALL rap was that way and admitted they had little experience with rap and that from what other people had told them, rap was a more diverse genre than they realized. lbr though, I'm a fairly big rap fan but even I can admit that misogyny is more prevalent/intense (I think intensity may be the real problem here. I can think of a lot of sexist pop/rock/country songs but the sexism often isn't as "in your face" as it can be in rap music) in rap than it is in some other genres. Does that mean it's in every rap song? No. Does that mean the majority of rappers say disgusting things about women? Well I'm not sure but I'd like to think not.

I think it mostly meant that people in the thread didn't know or listen to any black rap artists.

I think everything else you're saying is mostly true. Although there are really good female rap artists out there and I wish I knew more about them to recommend but I'll just throw out Azealia Banks. Also Big Freedia isn't really a rapper but I don't care everyone should listen to Big Freedia I mean seriously

ayrt

Azealia Banks is brilliant :)

I haven't given Big Freedia a try, but I think I will now!

I agree that female rappers should get more of the spotlight. Rap is just such a male dominated genre (or at least men are the ones who the lion's share of attention). But I'm hopeful that more ladies will start breaking through in the coming years

Too bad she's a self-hating misogynistic, homophobic rapper.

I left two recs myself, one black rapper and one white rapper (of which the former is much better known). I find it hard to believe that anyone who likes rap at all could not listen to black rap artists; I mean, that's most of the genre...
