[Gangnam Style/PSY]

Okay... Cool for you, I guess.

I'm just disappointed with it because a lot of people are assuming all Asian music is like that song, instantly shooting down any chance I had of trying to introduce them to Kim Kwang Seok or whoever.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's good but actually kinda skeevy too. Like there's enough examples of Asian men being desexualized, the 'let's laugh at the funny-looking man and his silly dance' attitude kinda annoys me. Asian dudes in western media tend to pretty much be geeks, goofy sidekicks, or silent ninjas. Kpop with it's greater variety is a nice change! :D

I came down here to agree with OP, but damn if you don't have a point. Sadness...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I read a great article about that phenomenon, and I definitely agree.

No, don't feel bad, you are wonderful.

I never realized this but now share your trolly joy.

Not really relevant, but I find PSY pretty attractive. (He's still not conventionally attractive, though.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, even though I can't think of any precedents in real life. He just has a little something something- possibly it's the dancing??

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I just figured that people gravitated to Psy because Gangnam Style came complete with an easily-monkeyed dance move that just about anybody could do... kinda the way the Macarena, the Ketchup Song, and the Twist became popular.

I honestly don't think it's because he fit some whackadoo American stereotype of how Asian men are supposed to look or behave. We just hadn't had any particular dance craze in a long time and we were due for one, dammit. If it hadn't been him, it would have been somebody else.

That sounds about right, yea.

For me the song and dance are just ridiculously catchy and fun; I didn't take anything else away from it.

I've heard Koreans consider Psy a sellout and hate him.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
If this is true, it really disappoints me. In all the interviews and what not I've seen him in, he seems like a genuinely nice, modest, guy whose very appreciative of all the unexpected international success he's had and that above anything else is what made me like Gungnam Style.

Why exactly would J-Pop fans be annoyed, given that there was something of a boom of J-Pop in North America about 7 or 8 years ago - cresting with Puffy getting an American TV show. We beat him by most of a decade. :p

EDIT - Also, only the 'recently' thing prevents me from pointing out Kyu Sakamoto or Pink Lady.

The only reason he got huge in the West is his funny dance, not his looks or music. People laugh at this song because they don't understand the lyrics and the dance is dumb, do you realize this?

So I don't think he's exactly a shining example for Korean musicians making it in the West.

Does anyone think K-pop/J-pop stars will ever make it big in the West? I'm not sure I do. They've had decades to do so. We have our own soullessly manufactured pop talent tailored just for us - why would we need it or want it from another country?

There's a reason why these factory manufactured plastic boy/girl bands don't make it in the West. We've already got our own, why should we listen to cheesy pop songs when we've got ones we can actually understand?

Seems like a push to call Psy's success racist, too. It's a legitimately catchy song, with a silly dance and a hilarious video, I don't think he got popular because he was Asian, but in spite of being Asian. Psy did transcend the barrier through humor and not taking himself seriously.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Except for the part where nobody in Kpop or Jpop fandom actually cares that PSY became popular instead of whoever it is they like.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I share this malicious joy with you OP. Although I share it openly, because the rest of kpop is garbage.

Yeah, instead of everyone thinking Kpop is full of plastic, autotuned, anorexic robots, they can now proudly declare they know six words of a parody song by a ridiculous man with a silly dance. Man, kpop sure earned the respect of the global music industry!

Nah, most of us are totally cool with it. The obsessives of some pop groups might not be but fuck them, they were always kidding themselves to think a shitty average Asian boyband would make it big on the charts elsewhere.
