I've heard Koreans consider Psy a sellout and hate him.

If this is true, it really disappoints me. In all the interviews and what not I've seen him in, he seems like a genuinely nice, modest, guy whose very appreciative of all the unexpected international success he's had and that above anything else is what made me like Gungnam Style.

this is not true (on the general scale). I would say that a definite majourity of Koreans are really excited that he broke into the American market, even if he is considered a joke by said Americans.

As far as I can tell, even /he/ doesn't take it seriously. It wasn't mean to be some ultra-serious drama or anything. Just fun and playful.

LOL. No, they're pretty psyched - national pride and all that. I don't think the concept of selling out contains "have your song become an accidental viral sensation", and anyway, Korean music industry is highly commercialized. It's not like he was an indie artist before.

Pretty much this. I mean, he sang the Korean national fight song for the 2012 Olympics. You don't really get much more mainstream than that.
