As much as I enjoy Sherlock, I never really got into the fic. I co-modded a challenge comm for a while but that's pretty much the only reason I read fic. Not sure why.

Definitely wouldn't have read fic about them though. The canon pairing is weird enough, considering how mismatched I always thought they were. Thinking about Anderson shagging anything just creeps me out. I think it's his hair. It bugs me even more than his personality.

I totally get the Sally hate though.

That's because Anderson belongs with dinosaurs.

Sally Donovan, a detective who hates Sherlock (she thinks he's a creepy psycho), and Anderson, a forensics/crime scene guy who hates Sherlock ( because Sherlock dismisses him as an incompetent idiot).

The core scene for the three of them is one in which Sherlock brutally and with great prickish precision deduces that Donovan and Anderson are having an illict affair (Anderson is married, iirc).

ETA: Best I could find quickly - from "A Study In Pink" - it's a mashup of bits from several scenes in that episode. though.

HOLMES AND IRENE CHAPTER 11: DONOVAN AND ANDERSON

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-01-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
DETECTIVE DONOVAN CAME IN THE BACK WAY THIS TIME. ANDERSON LET HER IN QUICKLY. THEY BOTH WORE CLOTHES THEY INTENDED TO BURN. THEY BOTH AGREED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY GO FOR IT ON PADDED SURFACES THIS TIME. NOW IT WAS TIME FOR LOVE.

A TEXT RANG ON BOTH THIER PHONES "TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW? YOU RANDY BUGGERS YOU" THEY DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE NUMBER BUT THEY KNEW WHO IT WAS.

"HOW. HOW!" SCREAMED ANDERSON

"HE'S BLUFFING. HE CAN'T KNOW RIGHT NOW. HE CAN'T" SAID SALLY.

"HE FUCKING CALLED IT THE FIRST TIME, HE FUCKING CALLED IT YESTERDAY AND HE'S CALLING IT NOW! HE FUCKING KNOWS!"

"THIS MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE. HOW CAN HE FIGURE OUT WHAT WE ARE DOING RIGHT NOW?"

"BECAUSE I'M STALKING YOU YOU SILLY BITCH." MURMURED HOMLES UNDER HIS BREATH, TRYING TO GET HIS PANTS OFF WHILE STAYING STABLE ON THE TREE BRANCH WITH THE BEST VIEW OF THE WINDOWS.

"YOU KNOW DONNOVAN IS KINDA HOT" SAID IRENE, WHO WAS DOING HER BEST TO NOT FALL OFF THE THIN END OF THE BRANCH.

"NOBODY SAID YOU COULD TALK" SAID HOLMES, AND PUSHED HER OFF.

I have mixed feeling about Sally. Like I think she goes a step too far when she calls Sherlock a freak.

But generally she's just trying to do her job and Sherlock himself has stepped way over the line when insulting her, so...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think she goes to far when she tells John that Sherlock is a psychopath and for sure, totally going to kill someone someday. That's massively inappropriate and slanderous. (She's a police officer, people might actually trust her judgement about whether or not someone's a would be murder more than the average joe on the street.) That's not the same as saying "I think he has inappropriate emotional responses to the crime scenes".

Basically, the second thing we see her do is try and destroy John and Sherlock's relationship before it even starts.

Don't get this pairing at all, sorry OP. No love for Anderson. Sally, though, she could be interesting? I'm not in the fandom, but I like what rageprufrock has done with her in her Fem!Lestrade fic. It gives me the complicated female relationship we're never getting out of the series.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
My headcanon for Sally is that her and Sherlock used to be BFFs with a lot of growing UST until something terrible happened and she went from admiring him to hating him. There's definitely history there (she is the only person in Scotland Yard who he knows by her first name. Including Lestrade. :P )

So I'm all for more Sherlock/Sally 'hate/make-up sex' fic. Or any for that matter.

THIS is the headcanon I've been going with since Day One. It's the only way I can tolerate her character.

You couldn't even try to start some fresher wank, you had to go with the old 'Sally hate' wank. D: Boo.

But alright, I'll go along with it.

I don't hate Sally, but I don't like her either. When we first see her and Sherlock together, Sherlock is being cordial to her (well, for Sherlock, anyway). It's obvious they have bad history and don't get along, but he's being polite. She insults and goads him, he turns into an asshole and fires back the 'best' way he knows how. (I do believe he went too far. He probably shouldn't have said anything, but with his personality...that was never going to happen.)

Then after Sherlock is arrested, she says "I told you so" to John, who (as far as I can remember) has never treated her badly or given her a reason to dislike him. That kind of attitude grates on my nerves. (In a less serious situation, it wouldn't have be such a big deal, but it was unnecessarily harsh given the circumstances.)

She could've done her job without any of that.

Sally hate? That's because Sherlock is a woobie with a heart of gold. Sally is incompetent, unprofessional, and bullies Sherlock just because he's different. She lets her *emotions* get in the way of proper police work. And proper police work is something the show really, really cares about... they even remembered halfway through filming that Inspector Lestrade would be a DI these days.

Sherlock failing to put on protective clothing to look cool, or messing with evidence? Shhh. John running around with an illegal weapon? Shhh. Mycroft abusing security systems for private surveillance? Shh. It's Sally who's evil. She said freak. Idiot is fine. Freak isn't. Because reasons.

And that female police officers don't wear skirts. Not even in the pouring rain.

Sherlock failing to put on protective clothing to look cool.

I actually liked that, in the pilot, he actually DID put on the goofy blue overalls like everyone else.

Don't forget that she's a sexually-active woman of color in a show otherwise all about the sausage. :)

She's a dick to Sherlock first.
Yeah, his response if disproportionate, but she started it.
Also, she told John that Sherlock was totally going to murder someone someday - that's actually incredibly inappropriate (especially since all she's got to go on for that is that likes solving the crimes and isn't upset by them - no history of violent behavior.)

Not to mention the "I told you so" line to John - that was just fucking mean.

I honestly don't get the Sally love. It all involves adding masses of unsubstantiated headcanon to make her frankly douchey behavior acceptable and puts the few facts we know about her through the best possible prism of circumstances.

Now Sherlock acts like a douche, too. But he's a competent douche who, on the balance, makes the world a better place. Being really good at what you do goes a long way to redeeming a less sweet character. Sally and Anderson, in addition to being downright nasty, also can't seem to do their jobs ... at all.

I can buy Sally/Anderson being a pairing that could be fun if the writer fills in the backstory and rounds out their characters, but it shouldn't be surprising that fandom as a whole doesn't buy into the rosy headcanon of a few fans.

I get the Sally hate even if I'm not on board. It's the fans that bend over backwards to apologize for a jackass man-child being a jackass man-child to villainize her that I don't and want to never understand.

also ewwwww sally/anderson :p

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate Donovan and Anderson, but to me there's really not anything particularly interesting about either of them. Their joint characterisation is pretty much "stock obstructionist who sometimes serves to set up a one-liner".

[personal profile] exposedlikeanerve 2013-01-30 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sally gets hate because she insulted precious Sherlock.

Case closed.

I don't agree with the hate, but that's how fandom tends to work.
