"Must Wear Pants" is the name of my new book deconstructing the cliches and archetypes of non-traditional female characters.
/not really
//it's probably already been written

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)It is far, far more likely to see a girl heroine fighting in a skimpy outfit than it is to see her in 'pants'. Your comment doesn't make much sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 01:18 am (UTC)(link)Is Adventure Time of all things a particularly heinous example of this? PROBABLY NOT. Is there nonetheless still a conspicuous difference in the amount of gender performance and sexualization going on for Finn vs for Fiona? I think if you're being honest you have to say yes.
It doesn't have to be wrong or The Worst Thing, but I'm happier examining and questioning it than quietly agreeing with the idea that a little girl can't be rowdy and rough and adventure-loving without also being qualified by certain adult notions of femininity.
I had lots of adventures when I was little, and I ran around and chased things and hit them with (wooden) swords. It never once occurred to me to wear a miniskirt while doing so. So yeah, why would it not strike people like me and OP as a little odd?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)Oh, I dunno, I was sent to school in flouncy skirts and tights and Mary Janes and pink-sparkle-explosion because my mom thought that stuff was cute, and I would climb the jungle gym and stomp a boy into the dirt at recess just the same. Though tbh I don't know how old they're meant to be in Adventure Time.
