I was sort of disappointed the girl version of Finn had to be aged up/sexualized. It doesn't say much for 'See, girls can adventure, too!" when she has thigh high stockings and a miniskirt.

DA

Also what's up with the romance in that ep?

Yeah...I finally got around to seeing the genderbent episode and was a little disappointed it went in that directioin somewhat. It's a sound message, but for a debut episode...

IDK about the miniskirt part. Many girls like wearing skirts. You can be feminine and skill kill monsters, right?
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-01-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
No you can't. Girls that fight have to have traditionally masculine personality traits and must wear pants. People would be confused seeing a girl in a skirt kick ass.

"Must Wear Pants" is the name of my new book deconstructing the cliches and archetypes of non-traditional female characters.

Well sure, but let's not pretend there is not a gender-based discrepancy in how belief is suspended for things like miniskirts & heels as athletic attire, boob-bowls & tinsel as armor, etc etc

Is Adventure Time of all things a particularly heinous example of this? PROBABLY NOT. Is there nonetheless still a conspicuous difference in the amount of gender performance and sexualization going on for Finn vs for Fiona? I think if you're being honest you have to say yes.

It doesn't have to be wrong or The Worst Thing, but I'm happier examining and questioning it than quietly agreeing with the idea that a little girl can't be rowdy and rough and adventure-loving without also being qualified by certain adult notions of femininity.

I had lots of adventures when I was little, and I ran around and chased things and hit them with (wooden) swords. It never once occurred to me to wear a miniskirt while doing so. So yeah, why would it not strike people like me and OP as a little odd?

I think the idea is that since girls tend to mature faster, Fionna is the same age as Finn but physically and emotionally more mature?

Also, considering nat's art style, it was just inevitable she was gonna be drawn that way.

The Odinsons are normal people who live in Chicago. They can't have a second child and adopt Loki from Russia. He was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and the older he gets, the more out of control he becomes. When his aging parents can't deal with him anymore and decide to institutionalize him, Thor promises to take over, and that they can leave Loki to him after they move to Florida. What his parents don't know is that to keep others safe from Loki, Thor has build a dungeon under his bookshop, outfitted with all comforts but nothing dangerous, and if necessary he can put Loki in bondage when he has a meltdown. While at first there is nothing funny going on, he has always been fascinated with how different Loki looks from him, with how pretty he is in spite of his relentlessly psychopathic ways. In a bid to escape, Loki notices, and tries to seduce him. Loki succeeds in the latter, repeatedly, but not the first.

Bonus if Thor angsts a great deal about hurting his poor baby brother and betraying the trust his parents put in him. Extra bonus if Loki enjoys Thor's angsting. Extra extra bonus if Thor is engaged to Jane Foster but has to break it off to protect his secret. Loki should be at least 17/18, and Thor several years older, but not over 30, young enough to have lived at home while Loki grew up.

No torture, no rape, no scat, no disciplining other than restraints, and no redeemed!Loki please, he's genuinely not aware that the things he does and say are unacceptable, and he never will be.

She's not aged up. Girl's just often physical mature faster than boys. Also why the fuck can't a girl wear whatever the fuck she wants when she adventures. Or can only tomboys adventure? There is fucking nothing wrong with being feminine.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Try adventuring in a miniskirt and stockings.

That's the norm, though. You rarely see a girl who kicks but in non-sexualized clothing. It gets even worse with the romance subplots in her episode(s). (Listening to 'bad little boy' gives off a huge romance angle)

Well...I think she was aged up. I think the doodles we saw of them originally were of an aged up Fionna at more like 16. To the point, Flame Prince seems older than Flame Princess, even thought it should be the inverse.

But since it was done under the light of Ice King fanfic, I don't really mind it at all.

I agree. Blame Nat. She came up with the designs.

I don't want the show (yet, and not for lack of harassment from my friends) but this really struck me too. Why couldn't the girl version be cute in a little girl way instead of a vintage pinup way.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2013-01-30 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because Nat.

See I thought she looked was 13/14. It's only her relationships with other characters that would make me think she might be older, but considering PG wasn't really PG, that's kind of distorted and not a really a good gauge.

Yeah, she was a little sexed up compared to Finn, but it didn't strain my suspension of disbelief. I could see a young girl wearing a skirt. The thigh highs gave me the impression of stylized long socks. It didn't seem all that out of tune. I used to wear skorts to play in.

I'm even okay with that episode being a little romantic, since there are a lot of episodes with Finn and Jake about romance. But if they made the next one with Fiona about romance too I will be seriously disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, I agree, but on the other hand, I'm just really glad that she has actual legs, not those spaghetti legs cartoons tend to have.

What people in this thread need to understand is the difference between

1. a girl or woman choosing to wear revealing clothes for whatever reason, and

2. a creator (usually male) putting female characters in sexy outfits so men can drool over them.

There was difficulty understanding this when it came to "Sucker Punch," too.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
stop speaking sense, those fictional characters clearly designed themselves, GIRL POWER

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But she's Finn's female counterpart. This doesn't need to mean they're exactly alike in personality (that they weren't really made me happy), but it does create a gross kind of standard where the boy is drawn in a goofy way, and the girl is drawn in a pretty way.

Fionna has some of her hair showing, has a more pronounced body (Finn is all sticks and squares, Fionna is actually drawn like a person--a rather voluptuous person), has all of her teeth, and is wearing much more flattering clothing.

To a lot of people she's a reminder that men = strong, women = pretty. Yes, Fionna is strong AND pretty, but Finn is just supposed to be strong. So why is the female version pretty? Maybe Finn is good-looking when not drawn in caricature, but Fionna exists with the same art style and ended up being a lot prettier.

If Finn were drawn more like Gumball, with his hair showing and all of his teeth, I would believe it's an accurate genderbent version. As it stands, Fionna was clearly drawn to be attractive.
