Yeah, I don't buy that logic either. iirc Quentin Travers called Giles out on having "a father's love" for Buffy (in "Helpless," I think? the cruciamentum ep), and Giles' own conflict in OMwF was that he knew that his protectiveness was holding her back. ~ Part of being a parent is sometimes girrting your teeth and letting your kids do dangerous stuff, because how else will they ever develop independence and self-confidence?

(Also, I just can't see it because I ship Buffy and Spike.)

Exactly. And the whole thing came across as really judgmental of differing parenting styles with a hint of ick because not every parent is going to be in a situation where they even can keep their child away from everything.

(Shipping one thing hasn't stopped me from shipping other things in this fandom. I'm one of the few people who ships Buffy with both Spike and Angel).

Heh, kudos then, for bridging what always seemed to be the Bangel vs. Spuffy divide.

I'm with OP on the Giles/Buffy thing though - I'm not squicked by Giles/Buffy (I admit I can see where people might get it from), but I personally find it more interesting as a deep non-sexual parental affection.

(Plus, Giles/Joyce was so delicious.)

Oh, I completely agree on Buffy/Giles. I don't care that I ship her with other people, but it is too parental for me to see it as romantic, and Giles is too much like my father for their not to be a squick factor.
