Idk I hated Pride and Prejudice but I love the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I personally feel like the relationships between the women in particular run a lot deeper than they did in the books, and the way Lydia's arc is being written right now really resonates with me. I thought I was gonna loathe her and I turned a complete 180. And they've hardly been talking about marriage at all, other than their mom being a nag about it and even then they've laid off recently in favor of other character growth.

. . .I thought Kitty as a cat was funny.

Okay, Kitty being a cat isn't that bad.

But still. "Everyone must get married!" makes no sense now.

But besides the mom who everyone rolls their eyes at no one has been saying 'everyone must get married'.

Mostly what I see happening is that Lizzie is gonna get a job at Pemberly Digital and that will be what helps out her family monetarily, just like how Charlotte's proposal ended up being a business proposal at Collins and Collins. Lizzie and Darcy might be friends or lovers eventually, but I think the more important thing there is the job. Jane broke up with Bing and then got a level in character fulfillment by moving to LA and doing more work in her industry. Getting married with her will be secondary. And Lydia is in a bad relationship because she's going through some growing pains and the way Wickham is fucking her over is a part of it, but it's not all who she is.

Have you been following recently?

Nah, I guess not. Thanks for the defense. I still think trying to shoehorn all of this into Pride and Prejudice is silly, though.

Carry on.

To be fair I think romance IS a real and important part of LBD. Darcy and Lizzie are definitely going to get together imo. The thing with Charlotte made more sense because there wasn't any romance between her and Ricky even in the book. The thing with Lydia and George isn't going to work out, but I think Lizzie/Darcy and Jane/Bing is endgame for sure. That's kind of the point of the story.

I just like that it shows that having a romance doesn't reduce the woman to "hi I'm going to be a wife now because that's what women do" and they approach romance and marriage in a very modern way. And I don't think Charlotte and Ricky are going to end up "together" (I sure hope not though I kind of ship Ricky with Fitz)

LBD isn't about "everyone must get married"

I mean their mom is still obsessed with that but it's more played for laughs/used as a source of stress for the daughters. None of *them* are all "I have to get married now omg"

I feel like Chard must not have been watching lately :P People who have been watching a long time know that it's not all about marriage.

I thought they made that pretty clear from the beginning, but yeah, it gets more and more clear as time goes on.

Even Lizzie's budding romance with Darcy doesn't focus on marriage. It's pretty much never brought up. I figure they might get engaged at the end, but that would be more because "I found someone I want to spend the rest of my life with" not "YAY I FINALLY FOUND A SPOUSE NOW I CAN BE AT PEACE"

*SPOILERS for LBD*

I loved P&P but I also love LBD for pretty much the same reasons - it's modern, doesn't focus on "omg must get married", and really develops the female characters and their relationships way more than in the original story. They adapted certain parts of the plot really well, such as Charlotte becoming Ricky Collins' business associate. I can't wait to see how they adapt other things, such as the falling out from Lydia's "fling" with Wickham. (They do a great job of portraying modern!Wickham imo. Emotionally abusive, has an ulterior motive, etc.)
