That argument about a parent's role is especially strange considering Buffy's relationship with her own mother. I mean, her mother found out about her being a slayer, and although she didn't like it, she didn't really try to stop her, did she?

Because there's that thing about Buffy... she's the slayer. She didn't get a choice, but they've shown on a couple of occasions that she can't just stop. It's not like sending a helpless girl into a fight, she has the tools to do the job (super strength, senses, reflexes, etc). Of course, Buffy's mom and Giles both would probably prefer she didn't have to do it because of their personal relationship with her, but both of them accept her as the slayer and "let" her go into dangerous situations. (Also, lol, like anyone could stop Buffy from doing what she wanted. "Let" indeed.)

Honestly, I don't see it any differently from the millions of real-life parents whose children serve in the military, or the police force, or become firefighters, or join the Peace Corps... loving your child and being concerned for their safety doesn't prevent them from recognizing that their child is doing something important to help others, and have been trained and equipped to do it as safely as possible. Most of them are probably proud of the field their kid has chosen.
