Favorite Book Illustrations (Pics Welcome!!!)

The illustrations in A Series of Unfortunate Events and the Leviathan Series by Scott Westerfeld. ARE JUST SO BEAUTIFUL.

So, what are your favorite book illustrations?

Redwall books, although the artist differs from book to book. The ones that are cleaner pencil outlines that have the mice with human hands are weird (The one i'm remembering ATM is Mattimeo), but the sketchier ones like in Lord Brocktree are my favorites.

I remember looking forward to Gary Chalk's drawings so much as a kiddo, and how I probably had this ridiculous weird elitism of favouring his design of the Martin sword ha.

I'm obsessed with John Tenniel's original prints from Alice's Adventures/Through the Looking Glass. I actually have one of them tattooed on me and am considering getting another.

The Larklight books, by Phillip Reeve, have the most wonderful and whimsical space-Victoriana illustrations. I don't recall who did them off the top of my head.

Anything by Oliver Jeffers. He makes the cutest drawing without them being sickening sweet. They are just charming.

Darrell Sweet's illustrations for Peter S. Beagle's A Fine & Private Place. I have two copies of the book- the paperback from the '70s that's signed to me by the author, and the illustrated one just for the pretty. I got that copy to give to a friend, but then I just had to keep it. Oops.

Shaun Tan's The Arrival. The book is practically nothing BUT illustrations. And very beautiful ones to be exact.

My mother's copy of Little Women is beautifully illustrated. Well, to me.
This is one of my favorite, of Amy alone in Europe, and missing her family.

Sadly, my mom's book is falling to bits, and i don't know the edition or the illustrator. But i love it.

Also - the Barry Moser edition of Alice in Wonderland.

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-01-31 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
If you weren't scarred for life as a kid looking at the pants-shitingly scary illustrations in these books, then your childhood was incomplete. Here's a blog that has someone's list of the scariest: http://tuneinrockon.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/the-15-most-disturbing-illustrations-from-scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark/ . If you google "Scary Stories to Tell in Dark illustrations," then you'll get some more.

There was this time when I was in 4th grade and the power went out my teacher decided a good way to spend the time was to read us stories from that book. I actually think it happened more than once. I was already terrified of the dark, so this was not helpful. This is only one of the many reasons why I hated that teacher.

That happens to be the illustrator who did Unfortunate Events!

Helquist did the illustrations in the new editions (and he's great, but not terrifying), but the orginals were by Stephen Gammell. His style is incredibly distinctive, and I remember reading an otherwise cheerful book about a woolly mammoth he illustrated and the illustrations STILL made it look sort of ominous.

Oh, whoops. I just skimmed the site and saw Helquist's name and thought that was a cool coincidence. Good to know!

I vaguely remember those books, to be honest. :(

Oh, man. Those books scared the shit out of me as a kid.

The scariest story (and an idea that still scares me shitless) is the one where the guy closes his eyes and CAN STILL SEE THE GHOST COMING FOR HIM! Aaaack!

Waaaait, which story? I've memorized about every story in the book, but I can't recall this idea. :0

It's the one where the guy is waiting upstairs in the house and the ghost slowly comes up the stairs to get him. Him being able to still see her when he closes his eyes is a minor part of the story; it just really freaked me out as a kid and stuck with me as a result. :)

I think he might be a preacher? IDK It's been more than 20 years since I read those books. :)

YEEEEEEEEEES

The stories themselves were always pretty lackluster, but I would just stare at the pictures for hours. I want those damn illustrations framed and hung up on my wall.

Quentin Blake's stuff for Roald Dahl books. I know they seem a bit messy and gestural but I've tried and that stuff is harder than it looks! :(

Also, Doctor Seuss.

Also, I have a book of Edgar Allan Poe stories that were illustrated by Arthur Rackham. The black and white stuff was uneven in quality, but the coloured plates were pretty boss.

Those, and the illustrations in Cat Valente's Fairyland series. Sooo purty.
