I think shows that do are doing so because they're being made with an eye to being sold abroad to be lapped up by Anglophiles. Look at the twee crap that is Midsomer Murders, it's fucking massive on overseas sales but I don't know anyone who particularly cares for it here. Doctor Who is definitely getting worse as it goes on, moving from *being* British to *appearing* British as the chances of breaking into the US market increases. And Downton Abbey is basically an exercise in appealing to Americans.

It becomes cyclical. We notice what overseas TV buyers want, so make and sell it, which becomes what overseas viewers expect and enjoy, so buyers buy more and producers produce more. We're propogating our own stupid stereotypes.

Whoa.

You leave Midsomer Murders out of this.

That's as much a country tradition as The Archers.

It just happened to pick up an audience abroad.

In my country, it used to be shown on sunday nights, on a channel mostly known for... its elder audience. We watched it for the nicely crafted crime stories.

It's a wonder that more villagers didn't run for the hills after the first few murders or so...

same in my country too, I remember my parents remarking how very "british" the show felt. I thought it was a stylistic choice, to mimic the old Aghata Christie detective story atmosphere, something you'd see in Poirot or something.

I'm not denying that the shows you mention have big fanbases overseas, but Midsomer, Who and Downton are definitely still hugely popular here.

"No! No! NO! We're not watching the bloody Good Life! Bloody bloody bloody! I hate it! It's so bloody nice! Felicity "Treacle" Kendall and Richard "Sugar-Flavored-Snot" Briars! What do they do now? Chocolate bloody Button ads, that's what! They're just a couple of reactionary stereotypes, confirming the myth that everyone in Britain is a lovable, middle-class eccentric - and I - HATE - THEM!"

How is Downton Abbey appealing to Americans? Elizabeth McGovern's character is barely there, has an irritating way of talking, and seems, from what little there is of her, to be a mishmash of stereotypes about the US.

*shrug* Good plot and good characters, and a pretty, gay servant boy? I mean, Americans can be pretty self-centered, but not everything has to be 100% about us, 100% of the time for us to pay attention to it.

It's a soap and soaps have universal appeal.

It's selling a fake version of England that is very popular abroad.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-31 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be ridiculous, the show did well before it got popular overseas. There's plenty of twee crap that's made in and for the UK market.

Hey. My boyfriend's home village exists pretty much purely for those shows you're hating on. I've had many a tour down country lanes to be shown where people died on Midsomer.
