He wasn't unpleasant, Juliet just said "but you never talk to me, you always talk to Peter"--so he wasn't an ass, he just avoided her. Which is completely understandable because he probably didn't want either of them to know his feelings, as it could muck up his friendship with Peter.

I disagree -- I definitely got the impression that he was being at best distant and at worst outright cold/unpleasant towards her before that scene. I agree with the OP, personally: that storyline makes me very uncomfortable. eta: Although I freaking love the rest of the movie.

(As a sidenote, before that scene I actually thought he was in love with the groom.)

I think we see how he is with her when we see them talk. He's not cold or unpleasant, he just obviously wants to stop talking to her asap. Like when he's on the phone with her. He is acting like he doesn't like her, but everything he says is friendly and polite. Everyone else picks up on that.

That's... pretty cold and unpleasant by my book. How would you feel if someone acted that way towards you?

You're just imagining things off-screen.

I would presume they are a polite person who just happens to have little interest in me or even doesn't like me, but is a nice enough to not kick up a fuss about it? Not everyone gets along with each other, that's life.

It's been a long time since I've seen this movie so maybe I've forgotten something, but I got the impression he basically just avoided talking to her or mostly interacted with Peter when he could help it. Which, yeah, he apparently has a big crush on her and she's dating his best friend, it's understandable that he'd want to avoid her.

Yeah, and if that's someone who loves the person you love the most, or if it's someone you have to spend a ton of time around, it sucks and hurts.

...really? "Hurts"?

Sometimes people don't like each other. Shit happens, people have different interests, they don't have much in common, etc - even leaving out the crush, there's only so much they can talk about the one guy they do have in common. If they don't share anything else, then any interaction between them would be awkward anyway. People often have to spend tons of time around people they have no interest in or even actively dislike because they share friends, and the best thing to do in that situation, if you can't make friends, is to keep interaction to a minimum to keep the peace. As far as we know, they aren't trapped with only each other for company or anything like that, so it's not particularly detrimental. It's not an ideal situation, I'll grant you that, but that's about as far as it goes.

...yes? It's not polite or respectful to make it open and obvious that you don't like another person. There are plenty of people I don't like and who don't like me, but when we interact, we ignore each other when we can and we're polite when we don't. I also know why they don't like me and vice-versa, even if I think they're idiots or assholes for it and I'm sure they feel the same way.

If someone I got to know started making it very obvious that they didn't like me, for no clear reason I could see, that would definitely hurt my feelings. And to me, it was pretty obvious in his behavior at the beginning of the movie.

we ignore each other when we can and we're polite when we don't.

Which, from what we gathered in the movie, is pretty much what's been going on. He ignored her when he could and was polite when he couldn't.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-31 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Everyone gets the sense that he doesn't much like her--she herself explains it as "you've never really warmed to me" but it seems like it's more a case of him not crossing over into warm and affectionate rather than being unpleasant.

Like when she comes to his house and says they want to be friends he says yes, yes, he does want to be friends. But then she's clearly expecting a hug or at least some kind of loosening of the tension and he doesn't give it to her. She still feels tenseness from it. That tension goes away (to be replaced by a different awkwardness) whens he sees the video.

ayrt

I'd feel the way Juliet says she feels. She thinks he just doesn't like her that much. Everyone they know thinks that. It's established that his behavior comes across as negative. But cold and unpleasant, to me, implies he's being insulting or hostile to her. I think that's why it's easy for her to understand him later. She doesn't have to forgive him for being nasty, just afraid to talk to her. (He did really nice things for her as a bride.)

It sucks for her to feel like he doesn't like her, but part of the resolution is him fixing that. Now he's going to be friendly because he's not hiding the secret.

(As a sidenote, before that scene I actually thought he was in love with the groom.)

I thought the exact same thing! And I was so excited, because I thought the film was going to have an homosexual storyline, too... but nope. He was just in love with the bride, hurrah for clichés.
