Eh, I wasn't a huge fan of the couple, but it had nothing to do with the age gap (I actually like a fair amount of age gap couples). Their whole relationship struck me as forced and artificial. She was desperate to not be what everyone expected of her-- an old spinster-- and he was a meek man who didn't want to hurt anyone. Their scenes together were rife with secondhand embarrassment for me. So... I feel bad for both of them, I like each of them well enough individually, I'm into age gaps, and I still didn't like them as a couple. I have a feeling a lot of other people agree with me on the oddness of their relationship too.

This is my thoughts about them exactly. I love age gap couples but like you said, there was just so much secondhand embarrassment and it was so forced and felt wrong to me, for both of them.
