obviously Watson was turned into a woman because American television can't handle homosexual subtext.

So... they missed the hugely popular Jude Law/RDJ movie where they openly said that Holmes and Watson argued like two old queens, and then the sequel where they decided that since the homosexual subtext was so popular with viewers, they ramped it up past the point where you could even call it 'subtext' anymore?

To be fair, that was almost definitely more about making money than being progressive or even positive about gay relationships.

Most all mainstream movies and TV are about making money. But if it makes money, then obviously the American public is okay with it.
