*facepalm* OP. Please. Stop. Your inability to read something while taking the social and cultural context into consideration is showing, and it pains me deeply.

Also a hint: many of us aren't reading it with "modern eyes" because we DO know the social and cultural context. That's why we don't equate it with a Bella/Edward relationship.

Define "should be emulated". Finding it very touching that a cold, damaged, reserved man has hidden reserves of love for his loyal friend of many years' standing (and, yes, imagining them in a context in which they are more than friends) is hardly the same as "omg this is so perfect, there are no problems here."

Unless you imagine no-one can love someone in a romantic sense unless that person is one's complete equal and never did things that hurt one. In which case good luck.
