as someone who didn't read the book or watch the movie, can someone explain the appeal of this pairing to me?

Bilbo is a cutie pie. Thorin is majestic. There is tension. And it ends in drama.

Bilbo is Martin Freeman though, ew.

1) They're main characters, 2) the actors are pretty, and 3) the characters are not related.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not that 3) stops many Hobbit shippers.

Sure as hell didn't stop me. I never, ever ship incest. Not judging people who do, it has just never done anything for me at all whatsoever.

Then Fili & Kili happened.

Fuck.

One of the characters is a brooding, angsty prince. The other is a slightly awkward, naive guy from the country.

Basically, it's your usual "Tall Dark and Handsome/Squishy and Adorable" pairing, with the possible addition of angst and conflict (since they both come from different cultures.)

Also, Richard Armitage is hot.

Their relationship is about the only one that gets any depth in the movie. Thorin is basically "I think you suck" for three hours and at the end he goes, "I was wrong! Hugs?"

They do have chemistry together. But then Martin Freeman's a master at the whole on screen chemistry bit.
