I'm in a long term relationship and I definitely care about shipping, and read romance fic all the time! But I don't care about it in the all consuming, every-waking-moment obsession way I managed when I was a teenager.

Yeah, don't forget OP is 17. So this is probably her first real taste of the irl thing (and good for her). no doubt she'll level off, but most of the younger fans who haven't had a relationship yet get invested a lot deeper, so it's no surprise they notice a difference from their new perspective.
