(Anonymous) 2013-02-01 03:14 am (UTC)(link)Honestly, though, the best way to get into Marvel is probably with the Ultimate series, which was a thing that Marvel did where they decided to have an alternate universe sort of a thing with new takes on all their main heroes and their history, from the beginning. Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spiderman are good series with a modern style and they'll give you a good introduction to the broad history of the characters and who they are. So that's what I'd recommend.
Re: OT, sort of
There are a lot of good series in the Marvel Now but I would highly recommend the Thor: God of Thunder series because it is very Thor-centered without needing to know extraneous details of his world and also very well written.
Avengers is another good title because it starts with the reformation of the Avengers and shows how it was built without having to worry about past incarnations.
Also, Hawkeye, which is up to issue 7 right now is absolutely amazing and they write it so that pretty much every issue can stand on its own. At most they are having two issue arcs.
There are lots of others, too. However if you wanted to go for older comics I would google for recs based on character. There are lots of sites that can guide you to authors that did good runs on a character and often when new authors take over a book they refresh things a bit at the start for new readers.
Also, don't fear using a wiki to fill in the blanks when a new character comes up that you don't know a lot about.
