Are there any of said RPGs that you would highly recommend?

I hate cutesyness and I hate grinding, and as such I haven't played a JRPG that wasn't produced by Fatlus in years, except Dark Souls. Are there any out there low on the cuteness and grinding quotient these days?

Well, I like those things, so I don't know what to recommend.

Fire Emblem is a strategy RPG series and doesn't have too much cuteness in it, it's just a standard fantasy universe. It's hard though -- when characters die, they're dead. There's no reviving them. Valkyria Chronicles is similar but instead of a fantasy universe it's like, fake WWII. So you might like those? IDK

I really like the Rune Factory and Atelier series and there's not much grinding in them, just a lot of collecting drops and synthesizing items which I enjoy, but they are filled with all kinds of cute anime silliness you might not like.

So in short, I guess I don't have anything to recommend?

I've heard good things about Fire Emblem, and I do like to be punished for screwing up (it's the mindless grinding I hate, not the challenging kind).

Any with outstanding stories? That's pretty much which I played JRPGs back in the day, and then many of them started to rely on cutscenes and spectacle and just fuck the dog when it came to plot and characterization (ugh, I'm looking at you Squeenix). I want to play one that'll make me laugh or cry like the JRPGs of old did.

I don't know, Radiant Dawn is actually a continuation of a plotline from a previous FE game and I'm honestly quite lost with the plot. It's not really why I'm playing the game. It does have a plot, it seems sort of decent, kind of along the lines of Game of Thrones or Legend of Galactic Heroes where there are a few different political faction fighting each other but they have their reasons, none of the nations are TEH EVIL or anything

Ogre Battle? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogre_Battle:_The_March_of_the_Black_Queen) It was originally released for SNES and PS1 and because not a lot of copies were released, it is expensive to get. Very low on the cuteness scale and the battles are challenging (if you want the best ending).
