Hmmm...I really like Diadra Empty and Hellsinker which are both unconventional japanese shoot-em-up games...but neither game is easily available. Also, Hellsinker is notoriously difficult to play--it took me weeks just to understand the power-up system. So I feel kinda weird about reccing them; they're hard to track down just to install and not particularly accessible, even if you play a lot of shoot-em-ups.

Some freeware stuff that I like:

Vanguard Princess is a surprisingly polished 2D fighter that's a lot of fun if you can get past the super fanservicey character designs.

Chokotto DiaRunba is a simple puzzle game that still kicks my ass regularly. You can't move your character by normal means; you have to move columns up/down so she can keep moving forward.

Leiria Stargazer is a standard, well-designed vertical bullet hell shooter. I like it because you periodically cancel screens full of enemy bullets to convert them into millions of points. :P

∀kashicverse -Malicious Intent- is. Um. Well, it's a lot like Hellsinker, in that it has trippy graphics that kinda look like Geometry Wars and Rez had a baby. Also it's insanely hard because there is glowing shit everywhere trying to destroy you and you have like, a gazillion powers that all do weird things, and 90% of my time playing this consists of me going OH GOD WHAT DO?!? But when you do figure out how to get past a tough spot, or figure out a cool way to utilize your esoteric powers, it is incredibly satisfying.

It's only available in demo form, (http://endless-shirafu.com/akashicverse/index.html) but it is one hell of a demo. It's definitely not to everyone's tastes but it's worth trying out once just for the WTF factor.
