It's not that hard to work out why people like Danny. 1. He is the everyman that the audience gets to experience Hawaii, in all its beauty and unfamiliarity, through. (He also serves the useful narrative tool of prompting exposition in this capacity). 2. He is (though you may not find it funny) one of the main comic relief elements.

You may not like him, but now you can at least understand why he's the fandom's favourite. As for his relationship with Steve, my interpretation is that they get on because he's one of the few people who has no qualms about standing up to Steve, so Steve can relate to him as an equal partner and their friendship has grown from that point. I kind of feel that their relationship works because Steve is a bit contrary and ornery himself and enjoys their arguments. YMMV, obvs.

As for the entire show, I'll tell the secret of How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Hawaii 5-0: I finally realised that it is inherently ridiculous, and badly written, but it is also undeniably fun and stupid. I mean, any show that contains the flashback episode where Danny relates how 9/11 saved him from criminals CANNOT be taken seriously in any way. So just stop doing that, and enjoy the ride, and make up a head canon where Danny bakes everyone cakes and helps move their furniture between episodes to make up for being a bastard, and you will bo so. Much. Happier. In this fandom.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I do see the traits that make him relatable to the audience. I guess it's mostly just me who's rubbed the wrong way by his actual personality. And Scott Caan.

Reminding myself that Steve likes their arguments will probably help. I think what annoys me so much though, is because one of my favourite things is bickering, so I always start out liking their arguments until Danny does one thing that is too antagonistic for and then it pisses me off more than it would if I didn't like my OTPs to bicker.

That's good advice, that headcanon will definitely help, lol!
