You know, I'm a very wordy person. I almost never call tl;dr or wall of text.

This is a terrible wall of tiny text. Also, I assume what you were trying to do with the spacing was keep the letters from being over the darker patches and therefore becoming completely illegible rather than barely legible, but it looks very stilted.

Despite this, I did read the secret, but I've never seen the show.

I hate to say this, but I agree. This was not the easiest secret to read both because of how long it is, but because of the text itself too. And I, like this anon, am a wordy motherfucker.

That said...uh...you're basically saying you dislike all the popular characters and love the least popular ones. I think most people have been there before.

Not even gonna get started on Danny because it's clear you dislike him and you're entitled to that opinion. I don't think he's all bad though.

Also, it sounds like you're reading some shitty fic. Not all of it's like that. (And perhaps you take some of Danny's comments too seriously? Many of them are meant to be cantankerous, sure, but not wholly serious.)

I don't think Danny would ever say anything to anyone just to hurt them, he is a bit ranty at times though and tends to make things a bit more dramatic than needs be. But he is mostly ranting at Steve, a man who is a Navy SEAL I am pretty sure he can take it... (also a lot of the time the earlier mentioned Navy SEAL have put our friendly neighbourhood New Jersey Detective in a life and death situation without backup, again... He is allowed to yell some)

Anyway opinion time I guess? I like Danny, I've liked him from the moment he hit Steve. But no one is perfect, not Danny nor Steve or any other characters in any show ever. And to be honest I prefer Steve over Danny.

Can't speak for the fandom, but now thanks to you I will probably look for that and then I will find it and everything will be ruined for me. slightly overly dramatic, but quite a few of the characters I like, have lost some of their shine after I've looked at the fandoms for them

It's not that hard to work out why people like Danny. 1. He is the everyman that the audience gets to experience Hawaii, in all its beauty and unfamiliarity, through. (He also serves the useful narrative tool of prompting exposition in this capacity). 2. He is (though you may not find it funny) one of the main comic relief elements.

You may not like him, but now you can at least understand why he's the fandom's favourite. As for his relationship with Steve, my interpretation is that they get on because he's one of the few people who has no qualms about standing up to Steve, so Steve can relate to him as an equal partner and their friendship has grown from that point. I kind of feel that their relationship works because Steve is a bit contrary and ornery himself and enjoys their arguments. YMMV, obvs.

As for the entire show, I'll tell the secret of How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Hawaii 5-0: I finally realised that it is inherently ridiculous, and badly written, but it is also undeniably fun and stupid. I mean, any show that contains the flashback episode where Danny relates how 9/11 saved him from criminals CANNOT be taken seriously in any way. So just stop doing that, and enjoy the ride, and make up a head canon where Danny bakes everyone cakes and helps move their furniture between episodes to make up for being a bastard, and you will bo so. Much. Happier. In this fandom.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I do see the traits that make him relatable to the audience. I guess it's mostly just me who's rubbed the wrong way by his actual personality. And Scott Caan.

Reminding myself that Steve likes their arguments will probably help. I think what annoys me so much though, is because one of my favourite things is bickering, so I always start out liking their arguments until Danny does one thing that is too antagonistic for and then it pisses me off more than it would if I didn't like my OTPs to bicker.

That's good advice, that headcanon will definitely help, lol!

As much as I try to like Danny, I just can’t. I find him completely annoying and unlikable and I can’t understand why he’s the fandom darling. On the rare occasion anyone admits that something he did was douchey, the anger is directed at the writers for “screwing him up.” I particularly hate the way he treats Steve. Even though I ship them, I honestly don’t understand why Steve likes him. I don’t know why he would want to be friends with such a whiny jerk.

I think part of my hatred for Danny comes from Scott’s portrayal (I.e. lines that are supposed to be funny/sarcastic come off as genuinely nasty because of his delivery) which is the only way I can still watch the show, with the knowledge, or at least hope that he’s not meant to be an asshole, so I can still sort of like him on some disconnected level, just enough to be able to ship him with Steve.

But what really drives me crazy is that fandom makes him even more of an asshole than he appears to me in canon. The things he days/does that I hate in canon are exaggerated and nearly every fic bashes Steve and puts Danny up on a pedestal. “Poor Danny, having to put up with such a crazy bf!” “Poor Danny his bf is so mean and emotionally distant!” “Poor Danny, his bf is so stupid.” “Poor Danny, he has to expend so much energy correcting his buff’s wrong wrongness about everything. Anything that goes wrong in their relationship is always stupid Steve’s stupid fault and how DARE he hurts PRECIOUS BB DANNY WHO IS PERFECT!/!!1 I’ve never seen a fandom with such an uneven application of those tropes.

I feel like I must be the crazy one, because I’ve never seen a single other person who doesn’t love him to pieces. I don’t even know why I have a problem because I ship plenty of other ships where one half is/can be considered kinda jerky/annoying e.g. Kirk/McCoy, Holmes/Watson, House/Wilson, Rodney/John, Tony/Anyone.

S!B: It’s kinda whiny and I don’t wanna harsh other people’s squee.

B!S: I have the exact opposite opinion as nearly everyone else in H5O fandom on every other character as well: I fucking loath Max, Mary, Anne and Kamekona, don’t give a shit about Grace and like Joe, Cath and Lori.

I tried to like H50 but the writing is the worst writing of any show on television, bar none. I could feel myself getting stupider every time I watched it. Of what I did watch I loved Steve and Danny has his moments, but I can't even slash them because Danny comes off like such a possessive Jersey jerk all the time, and honestly I think Steve is way too hot for him, as in I don't even know how some people can find Danny attractive at all. I left the fandom a long time ago when everything went downhill, but I can tell you why Danny is the fandom fave. It's because he's seen as the bottom in the relationship, and fandom usually self-identifies the most with the 'girl' of the couple. Sad but true. Sorry but there's no way I'm ever going to self-identify with anybody that unattractive.

There's no point in defending Danny to you, Anon. This is as YMMV an issue as there is. There's no magic set of words that will make you go "aha, now I see why everyone finds him adorable and fun!" If he doesn't appeal to you, he doesn't appeal, and that's that.

Though, you know, I'm starting to wonder why you are bothering with the show at all. You seem to dislike nearly all the characters and the plots and visual artistry aren't that amazing.

I like Steve. And Kono and Chin. And I like the Steve/Danny interaction whenever Danny isn't pissing me off.

Honestly though, I used to look at people complaining about how much they hate Supernatural and Doctor Who and not understand why someone would keep watching a show they'd stopped liking, and then it happened to me. I can't explain exactly why I keep watching, but part of it is clinging to some insane hope that it will actually stop sucking somehow.
