See, and I tend to love the AUs in this fandom and avoid them in most others. One of my favorite fics in this fandom is a swan queen UA where the curse really is a figment of Henry's imagination. To each their own, I suppose.

Have you just not come across any you like or is there something about the show/characters that you can't picture re-imagined?

Really? This is a fandom where AU of it makes total sense. Considering that it's a story of pretty much an AU of Disney movies where an AU of that AU live in the "real world".

Wow. Is there any good fic for this fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
loads. there's some crap, true, but also some really good authors working in this fandom at the moment. it's a relatively new fandom, though, so there's a run on bemoaning at the moment.

I posted my favorite authors below, but without links to their stuff. So here they are, although be warned that they're known for Rumbelle stuff.

http://archiveofourown.org/users/fyre/pseuds/fyre -over a million words of ouat fic, and I loved a lot of it. Also she's been around lots of fandoms for over a decade and writes good meta on her tumblr, at amuseoffyre. Lots of rumbelle, lots of everything and everyone else, too. As to whether her stuff is in character, I'd say so-- she seems to have anticipated some of the show's plot points before they happened. I don't normally go for AUs or crossovers, but she does both well. Also has done AU Mulan/Aurora, Rumpelstiltskin/Jefferson/Regina, AU Graham/grown up Baelfire, Rumpelstiltskin/Granny, August/Rumpelstiltskin/Belle, and Harry Potter, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, noir detective, and Dr. Who crossover/fusion type things. And I'm sure I'm missing some stuff. Basically, even if you don't like all of her stories, she's probably written something you'll like.

http://archiveofourown.org/users/nym/pseuds/nym, in her case, specifically http://archiveofourown.org/works/377718?view_adult=true&view_full_work=true -"A Bed of Thorns," the big rumbelle epic. What if Rumpelstiltskin asked Belle to be his wife instead of his housekeeper? I kind of groaned at the premise until I read it. Now I look forward to new chapters almost as much as to new episodes of the show. But if you avoid WIPs, you might want to give this one a pass, as it's at nearly 390,000 words and counting. On the other hand, she updates weekly, and, like Fyre, seems to have anticipated the OUAT scriptwriters at points, her character studies are great and her smut is fantastic.

http://archiveofourown.org/users/rufeepeach/pseuds/rufeepeach -is known for writing smut, but is also pretty handy at the angst, and some interesting little darkfic pieces too. I like "Wrapped Around a Spindle," but all of her stuff is good. Her Kathryn/Gold AU broship fic, "Not Necessarily Tragic," is awesome and cute. "Belonging" is about a Regina that scared the hell out of me even when I felt sorry for her. She's also written Mad Swan and Ruby/Gold and probably some pairings I'm forgetting. Again, even if you don't like everything she writes, you'll probably like something.

Also, Bad Faery. If it doesn't go without saying.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That depends. What sort of thing do you like to read? Which of the characters would you like to read about? Blanket recommendations never seem to work out, but if you love Archie and hate Regina and would prefer to avoid romance, for example, that gives reccers something to work with.

See, I may be an exception that proves the rule. I can SHIP ALL THE THINGS, I like ALL the characters, and love ALL the conspiracies, and am just looking for quality (see in character). maybe i'm just looking the wrong places?

can't I love Archie and Regina?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Of course you can--I like pretty much all the characters, whether it's love to hate them (Cora and Hook) or just love them (everyone else). I'm mostly a Rumbelle shipper, even if I cringe at portmanteau shipnames. So as far as that pairing goes, I like the big pairing juggernaut fic, A Bed of Thorns, by Nym, which is hosted on AO3. It's a WIP, though, and a very long one, but it's held my interest so far. It's AU, but not extreme AU of the no curse, no Fairytale Land, and Regina is head of a big corporation sort, or whatever the go to scenario is. And most everything by rufeepeach, also on AO3, is good, although she does write some non-magical AUs. And Fyre, who, again, hosts her stuff on AO3, is mostly a Rumbelle-author, but she's written a smattering of everything. Hell, she wrote Rumpelstiltskin/Granny and Blue Fairy/Zoso (and made me like both!), so I'd say she's up for anything, including some cute gen character study type stuff. She's also written AUs and crossovers, but plenty of her stuff is neither, and she writes interesting meta too. All three authors also have tumblrs where they sometimes post smaller ficlets and ask for prompts; Nym and rufeepeach with the same handles, and Fyre as Amuseoffyre. I hope someone will recommend some non-Rumbelle stuff they think is good; I liked what I've read so far, but mostly it's been by Rumbelle authors who also write gen or other pairings.

I hate au's for the most part in any fandom. I tend to view them as cut and paste Harlequin novels with the names changed. (that used to happen quite a bit) Besides, if I am reading fanfic for a fandom, its because I like the canon and want to read what happens to them, not just their names.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Meant to say I want to see what happens in that canon world and with the characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not a big fan of AU's for that reason. A lot are like that.

However I have come across a couple of good ones that really take the characters the story and the setting and just molds it into a new and creative form.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say I'm amused by the phrasing "even the good-written one". Is there exactly one AU you think is well-written but still can't stand, OP?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-04 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
And I am your complete opposite. I can't stand AUs in general! But I keep reading ones in this fandom. They're addictive. I'm even reading crossovers and I never do that. The things Robert Carlyle does to me...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-04 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind the AUs, but I've wondered before why this show seems to spawn so very *many* of them. If I had to guess, I'd say that because the characters' histories are still being filled in piece by piece via flashback, and the dynamics in the present-day storyline are in constant flux, even a canon-based story will get probably get Jossed and *become* AU within an episode, so why not just write in a different universe that you control?

Also, there's a line between 'What if x and y owned a bakery?' AUs and 'What x took the left fork instead of the right at a certain point in canon' AUs. The former I'll only read if I like the author, the latter I'll *inhale*.
