If I may? I think what the OP meant (or how I interpreted this) was people who are overly judgmental to the point of being an utter dick about ships / favorite characters / other aspects of fandom.

Using one of the oldest fandoms as an example: Transformers. Optimus Prime/Elita-One is a pretty popular ship-- however, it's not something I ship. All is well here, right? When it starts getting into people jumping down my throat for not shipping, or me getting in someone's face for shipping it, it's what the OP was talking about.

Right, sure, I agree that there are legitimately areas where tastes differ, and people really are being judgmental assholes. I just think it gets way, way too much play. It's used way too often, almost reflexively. It almost seems like it's a response to any disagreement or any negative statement whatsoever, and people seem to think it just automatically ends any argument, and it's often with this really, like, self-righteous tone, and it's just wearisome and really getting on my nerves.

You're seeing more fans asserting that they don't need to justify themselves than overzealous judges of what other fans like? That sounds like it could be obnoxious too, but I've never had that problem. And I'm pretty thoroughly sick of the other.
