I agree, there is no reason to swear off first person. There are some really great books in first person, they're not all like Twilight. I don't think I ever limited my reading in that way, (though I do lose a little respect for authors who say they write in first person because they 'can't' write any other way). Although I never used to write in first person, because it didn't feel as objective as I wanted, I've started to explore it more since some of my teachers have suggested using it for the stories I'm working on. It's a learning experience because I find it more difficult to prevent a stream-of-consciousness thing from happening, but it does open up a very different perspective on what you're writing. You naturally write it with a different viewpoint than third-person, and both are effective for different things. People who think that one kind of point-of-view is inferior to another for any reason has a fundamental misunderstanding of what they are. The fact that it CAN be done poorly doesn't mean anything. All writing can be done poorly. It has to do with the ability of the author, not the POV. It's like saying 2nd person is only good for 'choose your own adventure stories', when if used effectively in an experimental story, it can be great.
