I guess I do understand that using first person makes people set a higher bar for what they consider OOC. But dismissing first person out of hand and back-buttoning your way out of the fic as soon as you see it's first person is kind of asinine.

The truth is, I've seen bad fanfic in first, third, second... the problem is the author, not the POV. I suspect that in many fanfics the person writing in first person fails to consider how the character *actually thinks* and so they lose the character's voice. In my small fandoms I notice first person sometimes can become a bit more self-insertion than the author realizes.
