Are you me? So much classic literature and published work by popular, professional artists is first person. I never heard anyone disparage it until I started reading fanfic.

I guess I do understand that using first person makes people set a higher bar for what they consider OOC. But dismissing first person out of hand and back-buttoning your way out of the fic as soon as you see it's first person is kind of asinine.

This! I immediately started thinking of classic lit that had first person and I'm thinking "How can anyone dismiss first person out of hand when it's got a well established history in literature?"

The truth is, I've seen bad fanfic in first, third, second... the problem is the author, not the POV. I suspect that in many fanfics the person writing in first person fails to consider how the character *actually thinks* and so they lose the character's voice. In my small fandoms I notice first person sometimes can become a bit more self-insertion than the author realizes.

Exactly. I think people accept first person from original authors more easily than from fan authors, because amateur fan writers who didn't create the character may have a hard time being perceived as getting the character's voice right. It's safer as a fan writer doing someone else's established character to not use first person. But it can be pulled off.
