I'm hesitating to see ParaNorman because I can't stand the design. The kid's head looks like a fucking Koosh ball. Why, designers, why?

You're not going to like the designs of everyone else then (Besides the fact that it's really good)

Yeah, I hate the look of most of the characters, in the pictures I've seen. I probably will give in and watch it, and like it despite the art. Maybe even warm up to it.

But I don't think hating on the design of drawn characters is equivalent to being shallow about "looks" in the sense that you only want to see "attractive" characters. I, at least, am talking about the beauty of the art, not "people". There's not a single live action actor I'd never watch because I think they're ugly. Animation design is a different kind of ugly.

I was talking about the movie in general, not just the art style. I should have clarified.

But I understand. The style works for the supernatural stuff very well, but for the ordinary people it's definitely off putting.

Paranorman actually just won the Annie Award for Character Design in a Feature Film. So maybe the designs will win you over by the end!

Really? That's amazing. Well, I guess there's no accounting for taste, and my mileage varies.

I'm not gonna lie--ParaNorman took a lot of chances with the character design, and while I loved the movie, there aren't really any characters that I liked looking at (well, the tubby redhead kid was adorable). I think the unprettiness of the characters is kind of the point, but I'm sure everyone says that.

I get what you mean by there being a difference between being put off by an ugly character versus an ugly person, but it's not exactly a flaw in their character design--they are very deliberately designed to look the way they do and they are supposed to be a little off-putting.

But it's so worth seeing anyway. It's a beautifully put together movie and the story goes in some seriously original directions. They took chances all over with it, really.
