I think Freeman has said a couple of things that could be read as sexist or racist, but are taken out of context in order to do so. I believe the Lucy Liu thing was an interviewer trying to get him to say something negative about the Miller/Liu Holmes adaptation (the name is escaping me at the moment), and Freeman basically cracked a joke that he was the better looking Watson. The whole quote made it completely clear he thought Lucy Liu is gorgeous.

Several people decided that he called her a dog because of racism (apparently there was some usage of "dogs and Chinamen" years ago) instead of the obvious current usage.
