first person can be good. it just so rarely is in fandom.

Exactly. If you're writing fanfic in first person, you not only have to match the voice of the character - which is an even bigger challenge if they're not from a book in first person - but you have to either match the reader's perception of that character's voice or write so convincingly as to convert the reader. First person in original works is a different thing altogether.

I can understand the argument that it's hard to do first person in fanfiction, or at least hard to do it in a way most people will like. But then when people go on to complain about all first person writing ever everywhere... I really don't know what they're thinking.

But that's true of third person too. Especially when it is close focus on one character or omniscient. Getting the "voice" and actions of a character to match the reader's perceptions is half the art of fanfiction.
