I think my brother has been taught by tv/books/school to ball it up because he refuses to fold it when he's using our thick, triple-ply toilet paper at home.

I thiiiiiiink I used to ball it up in like, kindergarten. But as mentioned before, that's just really impractical.

I tried asking him who told him to ball it up but he says he doesn't know. He only watches the children's channel at home and older shows like the Magic School Bus and Arthur on the computer. He really likes Diary of a Wimpy Kid series right now and he always borrows a lot of books from the library when he visits. I've tried to show him folding uses less paper and covers a bigger surface area. My parents have talked to him too but he keeps balling it up.

...your family cares about this enough to actually try and have intervention-level discussions with him? That is way weirder than alternative wiping practices. :/

We're afraid he might end up clogging up the toilet by using too much toilet paper at once. He used the toilet as a garbage bin when he was younger so it's sluggish now. The toilet paper will dissolve eventually but if the toilet back up before the toilet paper dissolves, the rest of us will be cleaning up the mess, not him.
