I don't think first person POV has a "well-earned stereotype for being crappy" -- the only times I've seen people deride it is in fandom. And frankly, I think bad stories are just as prevalent in third person, if not more so (what with all the third person omniscient fics around).

JFC, I haaaate third person omniscient. I know there are some examples where it's used well, particularly for humor. But it just makes me want to throw things a solid half of the time.

I think it's just a little harder to do right, and so fandom, having a lower quality pool and less experienced writers, tend to fuck it up more.
