Slightly OT but I liked Handy/CloneDoc/TenToo/whateverhisnameis more than I liked end-of-season-4-Ten (as a person, that is. Ten is still the more interesting character).

He was a pretty awesome guy, IMO, all Ten's good traits with none of his biggest bad traits. Outward-looking about the people involved in danger rather than crippled by inner turmoil over Davros' Hannibal Lecter rambling, perceptive about Donna's inferiority complex, level-headed and rational about the Dalek threat, unapologetic about his love for Rose. Sure, a little blithely violent, but seriously, allowing the Daleks to go spread death and destruction across the universe because you hate killing is a lot more violent than gritting your teeth and blowing them all up before they can hurt anyone, IMO.

So if being half-Donna makes him into a that much healthier and happier person, being half-Donna also makes him a better partner for Rose than the original Doctor could ever be by that point in his character development. So I can't say I have much of a problem with it.

Outward-looking about the people involved in danger rather than crippled by inner turmoil...perceptive about Donna's inferiority complex

I'm certain this is pure coincidence, but upon rewatch I caught a strong whiff of Eleven in Tentoo's adamant refusal to pay any attention to his OMG MASSIVE CLONING BLUES EXISTENTIAL CRISIS WHO AM I???? and focusing all his attention on Donna and then Rose for the duration of his screentime.

*blinks* ooooh I didn't think of that! If I ever bring myself to watch JE again, I'll keep that in mind. I never really bought Ten comparing Tentoo to Nine, because Tentoo was nothing like Nine. Nine couldn't even bring himself to kill the Daleks in the series 1 finale.

Actually now that I think of it, his 'birth' ("You're naked!" "OHYESSS!" and then immediately jumping into action babbling a mile a minute) was quite a lot like Eleven's first moments too...

There's also something very Eleven-ish in the way he just stands there and lets original!Ten take his self-loathing out on him. Just sort of "yep, I know that feel, bro, and I probably deserve it anyway."

Also probably coincidence. Or maybe Eleven is just what happens when you make Ten get over himself even a little bit.

ayrt

I honestly have a hard time imagining Ten logically regenerating into anyone other than a) Eleven (or at least someone a lot like him), b) a massive cynical super-stoic sarcastic grouch, or c) the Time Lord Victorious. Ten and Eleven are just too...symmetrical, I guess, for Ten to not become Eleven-ish or for Eleven to not have once been Ten and still make sense, so it's probably just a case of both RTD and Moffat possessing Writing Skills 101 (even if sometimes they could have really fooled me...)

Not to mention "what kind of new direction would the audience enjoy?" has been lining up perfectly with "what would this incarnation Doctor like to be more like?" since One became Two, so there's also that.

Still totally bitter Ten didn't get his chance to develop and get over himself in The End of Time without using cheat codes, though.

Yeah, I think a major foundational part of Eleven's character is that he's deeply ashamed of having been Ten.

Still totally bitter Ten didn't get his chance to develop and get over himself in The End of Time without using cheat codes, though.

I know, right? It took me over a year to realize that, nope, RTD wasn't interested in writing an arc where Ten faces his demons and lays them to rest after learning from his mistakes. Ten just gets more and more broken until it finally gets to the point where even he has to admit he can't fix himself and his best bet is to reboot and start over as someone else.
