Yeah the first time I'd even heard the "first person sucks" notion was online in fandom, and I was so taken aback by both the vehemence and the authority with which people were making the claim that I actually assumed they had a point and went to ask my lit prof what was the deal.

He had no idea. He'd never heard it before either.

So yeah it's just a twee fandom thing. I wouldn't worry about it.
