This is me in real life
Which is kind of stupid. I've had plenty of people do nice things without any expectations whatsoever in my life. Hell, I do that a lot.
But if someone else is really nice to me, especially at some expense of their own, and they're not obviously getting something out of it, my first reaction (in my head) is, "What are you up to? What do you WANT?"
It gets even worse in fiction.
It may not be about your upbringing. Some people are just naturally suspicious, and hey, in fiction there usually is something going on with someone whose a Good Samaritan just for the hell of it (if they are not already a hero or otherwise pre-established as just being a Good Person).
