I tend to measure the value of consoles based on how many hours of gaming I get out of them, and then I compare that to movie ticket prices. So, for example, if I pay $400 for a console and a game, and played the game for a hundred hours, that's much cheaper per hour than a movie ticket or a meal out.

Consoles and games ARE expensive, but they're way cheaper overall than most other forms of entertainment, especially if you don't care about new releases.
