Nothing wrong with it. It does, to some degree, depend on the restaurant. But the real point of a restaurant is to go out to eat and enjoy the food and atmosphere. Can't be assed to give a damn about anyone who would judge someone for that.

I've done it a few times myself--usually more casual places, but at least one place where it seemed like the atmosphere was more couple-y. Never brought a book, though, usually just an mp3 player.
