As for hating first person... To be honest, third is my favorite, but I've seen first person done exceptionally well, too. I think it can be challenging to write for some people, particularly in fanfiction, because they're in the head of the character they're writing 24/7, and where a few incongruous sentences in even limited third person can be waved off because of point of view, it's much easier to fall into OoC territory in first - at least from what I've seen. In published works, as well, when you're writing first person, you have to keep a stronger grip on your narrating character's voice. There's a lot of potential to go wrong that the author has to contend with, Imo, and when it's bad, it can get pretty bad - but when it's good, great!
P.S. One of the hottest PWPs I've ever read was written in first person. ;)
