It is much, much easier to screw up first person than third person. I could grab a random Teen Paranormal Romance off the shelf to prove the point. It's nice (and interesting) that you've had the opposite experience, but most writers will tell you--first person has a lot of advantages, and certainly has situations where it's your best choice, but it is so much easier to make it terrible. And part of that is because if you create a crappy character, and especially if you do that and aren't aware, and you think that character's great...well, we're stuck in that character's head for the duration of the story. It's much easier in first person for a character to sound self-absorbed. And you have to nail the voice just right. It's a valid storytelling choice, but its very nature just gives more hurdles than plain ol' third-person.

And that means there's more of it that seriously sucks. Because bad writers make bad writing. And a lot of bad (or just learning) writers choose first person because it seems like it should be easiest--after all, you think in first person, right. And, well...badness ensues.

It shouldn't be an immediate turn-off. But the general antipathy toward it is not unearned. It's a little like, say, pit bulls. Or German shepherds. They can be (and often are) genuinely sweet, loving, adorable, wonderful dogs. They have a reputation for being aggressive because yes, if they're not raised properly, they can also be dangerous. Because of that, for example, some apartment buildings won't allow them at all, which is stupid and unfair.

Though, for the record, there is nothing right about first person present tense, especially if you are writing a porn (*cough*fiftyshadesofsuck*cough*)
