There are places where people customarily take off their shoes before entering private homes. It took me years to stop being weirded out when fic mentioned characters taking of their shoes as a part of undressing for bed.

What?! Oh god, I will never get over the fact that people wear their shoes at home. But... it's dirty! And not very comfortable! Also, I'm one of those people sit cross-legged all the time, which wouldn't work well with shoes.
