There are places where people customarily take off their shoes before entering private homes. It took me years to stop being weirded out when fic mentioned characters taking of their shoes as a part of undressing for bed.

As soon as I'm in the house I take my shoes off. So...IDK if that's what people are going for or what.

I tend not to notice this though. Not sure if it's a rare thing or I just overlook it completely.

Well, but that compression of action happens in a lot of fic. ~ If the action calls for someone to drive somewhere, authors will rarely articulate "and then they walked to the car, and opened the car door, and got into the car, and put the key in the ignition, and turned the key until the car started, and backed out of the garage ..." and so on - unless those actions are significant detail in some way, used to elucidate character or mood or somesuch. ~ To me, shoe removal is like that.

BUT, I do agree that ALWAYS ignoring the undressing/shoe removal is wasting an opportunity for characterization and foreplay: exhibitionism, foot fetishness, or shyness, or sleepyness (e.g., Char A takes one shoe off and then gets under the covers). I personally find the foreplay & pillow talk in erotic writing more interesting than the "Tab A - Slot B" bits.

ETA: Shoes off at the door in my house too. But for pron purposes I'll pretend we're talking about clandestine gropings in a hotel room. :p

Shoes can be really sexy and smut writers should play with that more. Maybe it has a connection to the popular opinion of feet being gross and unsexy?

Anyway now I have this stuck in my head even though they don't mention shoes either.

I can't be the only person who's thinking of Jeff's Sock Gap from Coupling. There's a more general point, though, and that's one of detail. If you're describing something in a lot of detail, it's very noticeable when you miss something out. At best your readers will wonder why, and at worst they'll think that what you didn't mention didn't happen at all because otherwise you'd have said so. In this case, if you're describing every individual item of clothing being shed being mentioned as it happens, if they don't take their shoes and socks off in the text then your readers could well be left with the impression that they've kept them on. Conversely, if you just put "they got undressed" then their minds will fill in the blanks.

Heh. I...may or may not have a fic I'm still working on where the first actual sexual encounter for the two mains gets stymied because they're both wearing work clothes--jumpsuit for one, overalls for the other--tucked into boots and getting them unlaced and off versus trying to have sexytimes with pants around ankles just gets awkward. (Well, they're very awkward characters to begin with...)

well, I don't exactly stop reading, but it does kinda ruin the immersion

if you are going to describe every single article of clothing being discarded, and then not mention the shoes (in particular, I mean situations where the characters were clearly wearing shoes because of the context), yeah, it does make my mind go

*SCREEECH* *HALT* "wait what about the shoes?"

or the socks

do I assume they just had sex with the socks on? or took them off at the same time than the shoes

and what about undergarments? sometimes I see fics where shirts, etc. and then pants/breeches are taken off, but then no mention is made of the underwear vOv

I do like it when the author actually does add those details, though

OT but has anyone ever seen porn where the guy is completely naked but still has shoes on, even though earlier he was wearing tight jeans or something that he couldn't have slipped off over his shoes? "I see you skipped the akward shoe-removal-then-jeans-removal-then-put-the-shoes-back-on-again scene. Okay then."

(Personally, I find naked-with-shoes unattractive.)

It will take me out of the story a little if something isn't mentioned about taking shoes/socks off during sexytimes, but not enough to judge someone over... that's a little excessive.

Personally, if it came up, I'd be wondering why they wore their shoes into the bedroom. Unless it's of the 'just got in the door and are barely making it to the bed' type of sex, and then yeah I'd wonder at least.

I feel you, OP -- though reading this made me realize that it's something I obsess over as a writer (it's part of constructing the scene) but probably don't actually pay much attention to as a reader.

I mean, the larger point of describing everything coming off; clearly our mileage varies as far as expectations about keeping your shoes on inside. I'd still usually assume that if a scene takes them from outside to the bedroom, then taking off the shoes would be described at that point, but I suppose it depends on the level of detail and pacing of the scene.

Speaking of peeves in porn:
WTF is up with stories where the characters are getting down to it and one of them will take something off and THROW it across the room? Do people really do that? At the most, wouldn't you just drop it on the floor nearest you?

Also, I love when the author accidentally writes (for example) "took of his pants" instead of "took off his pants". Because that makes me think of the language in the Bible, and then I laugh. Ye child, take of my pants, and want for naught...

I feel the same! Pay attention to the little details, author! You can't take jeans off over work boots, and it takes some maneuvering to have face-to-face sex with someone who has jeans around their knees. You gotta somehow climb up in between there and then you have jeans scraping your back!

Just take the shoes off. :)

For women, I think shoes on is kind of hot. Many dresses/skirts can be removed (or lifted) with heels still on, and I really like that and have done it myself. But I have a thing for people going at it while retaining most of their clothes. Is there a shorter name for that kink?

I'm neutral on feet- I don't think they're sexy at all, but they're not repulsive- but heels are sexy. If the man is getting completely undressed, he should take their shoes off. Because that's just silly.
