All you who say you take your shoes off when you enter a home...HOW DOES THAT WORK? I mean, if a family is getting home all at the same time, for instance?

I'm just trying to envision four people crammed into a mudroom, trying to stand around on one foot while untying and removing shoes before daring to enter the house proper, and I really, really can't

Eh? I've never really thought about it, you just walk in remove your shoes at the same time as you take of your jacket and put both things in its proper place, it doesn't take much longer than just removing your jacket (which I assume you do too when you walk into your home?).

If it is too crowded you just wait a moment before stepping inside, it is no biggie. My dad's house got all of 1 meter times 2 meters of place for jackets and shoes right inside our front door, and as a family of four when we all come and go we just take turns.

Usually not everyone walks in our out at the exact same time even if we are coming/going together. One might be getting stuff from the booth of the car, while another is getting the mail and the third is unlocking the door, leaving the fourth to go into the hallway to take of jacket/shoes before the "keyholder" does the same and so on. (and other way around if we are leaving to somewhere)

Did that clear it up for you? Just ask anything, if it didn't.

That is when you stand outside the mudroom to loosen the shoes before kicking them off in the room.

Also, lines and wait your turn.

Our foyer is big enough to hold a bench that sits three, a chair and a small stool. The solves some the queue problem at our house.

We also have extra indoor slippers (rubber for summer, cloth-covered for winter) for people visiting. Hurrah for being prepared!

Most houses have like a hall where you leave your coats and shoes? Ours is relatively cramped, and there were 5 people living here ate maximum capacity, and it was never a huge issue. I mean when I was a kid, they took off my shoes off first, sent me in, and removed their own. Now you just sort of wait two seconds so the person in front of you can remove their shoes.

Honestly, in my house during winter, this is exactly what happens. It's a bit like playing Twister. A bunch of people in heavy coats stand around in the doorway trying not to knock each other over while they strain not to step off the mat while each person tries to remove their boots as quickly as they can (which is rarely quick, given boots are often laced) and then hop away far enough from the door as they try to avoid stepping in any of the snow that they've just tracked in.

But you know, it's just one of life's awkward things and you do it anyways. :) I'd be way more annoyed if I had to walk through trails of water in my kitchen.

We have a hall where people take off their shoes and put on slippers. I've noticed that many american houses don't have a hall and the main door opens directly into living room/kitchen (which really sucks for insulation, but whatever). It tends to be big enough for several people.
