I seem to recall reading a few essays about the tendency of TV characters to have way, WAY more sexual partners than average people. Maybe it's because we're supposed to want to be them?

I bet it's also just easier on the writers than either writing on-going relationships (there would be casting/scheduling issues with that, too) or avoiding relationships entirely. You can just invent a new girl/boyfriend of the week to facilitate whatever comedic/dramatic situation you want!

There's a cracked article about this for Seinfeld where George (the supposed loser in love) had a total of 43 girlfriends.

I think that if a significant other were to stick around for more than three episodes we, the audience, would want to know more about them and that's *hard* plus it counts as a story arc which is undesirable for the more episodic series.
