Yanno, I've never gotten the appeal of being a BNF. It seems like it's a lot more trouble than its worth, imo. I'm with you OP, sometimes, it's better to be a nobody than to have that invisible target painted on you, imo.

Depends on the fandom. In a quieter, less wank-prone fandom it can be fun.
