Yanno, I've never gotten the appeal of being a BNF. It seems like it's a lot more trouble than its worth, imo. I'm with you OP, sometimes, it's better to be a nobody than to have that invisible target painted on you, imo.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the fandom. In a quieter, less wank-prone fandom it can be fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This actually kind of sounds like it sucks. I'm sorry. But I would totally switch with you in a second, target on the back or not, because I'm shallow like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
ot, but do rumbelle shippers actually think mr.gold in his lizard form is hot? this is why i could never get into rumbelle

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes lizard!Rum looks better than others.

Clean and well-lit in Skin Deep- Hot
Clammy and toadlike in the finale- Not

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'd still do him.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for all of them, but I do. Although if I ever met anyone whose teeth looked like that in real life, I'd probably hesitate to kiss them, true love or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Would people actually have identified what pairing they were talking about if they hadn't named it later in the secret? The picture seems particularly obscure.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
ikr

also, is that cup chipped or is it a funky design

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. The chipped cup is a huge thing with the Rumbelle plotline in Once.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
As the person above me said, if you know the pairing or the show, then yes, probably. The chipped cup is a big deal for their storyline. Last remnant of a (repeatedly) lost love, sort of thing.

It's a chippped cup, in ouat world that means Rum/Belle.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
If they watch Once Upon a Time, then very definitely. Rumpelstiltskin/Belle is the show's take on Beauty and the Beast, and given that said show airs on ABC, which is owned by Disney, well, if you've seen the Disney animated film you know where they got the cup from. Thankfully this one doesn't talk. (Couldn't now anyway. Still twitchy about that last episode.) I kind of pity anyone who goes looking for a complete Royal Albert Val d'Or teaset in the future for non-fandom reasons, because they'll have a hell of a time finding a set where the cups weren't sold off individually to fangirls and cosplayers and immediately defaced with blue paint and deliberate chips.--a Belle cosplayer.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, dear. People do that?! I mean, china isn't something I have an interest in, but the idea of someone deliberately buying a cup to fuck it up for their cosplay makes me grit my teeth.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
What's making me grit mine is that they're going for a specific *maker* when they could be using stuff they got at the thrift store no one is going to miss.

Admittedly, I have a vague interest in china [specifically tea cups] so that doesn't help but...seriously. That kind of thing does rub me the wrong way.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Er--I did say I was a cosplayer. I bought one for that reason. Haven't gotten around to defacing it yet, though. If it makes you feel any better, the people who already have intact sets must be grinning ear-to-ear as the value goes up. Also, even though it's awesome and spawned the second most popular canon ship on the show, you probably shouldn't watch the episode where that cup makes its first appearance, as a whole bunch of them were violently destroyed on camera. Especially if it took multiple takes to film. So blame the props guys, the scriptwriters, and Robert Carlyle before you come after cosplayers. Depending on how long the show runs, who knows, there may be an official licensed replica at some point.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
So, OP, you realise you've started a guessing game, yes? There aren't that many BNFs in Rumbelle fandom. Bad Faery, Fyre, Nym, Rufeepeach... who am I missing? (although it has to be said I hope it isn't anyone whose work I read, but no matter who you are, OP, you're not obligated to post fic, or be nice to people, but I'm sure your readers and fans appreciate that you do and you are. And if you need a break from Rumbelle fandom, take one.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think Lost is too, and Cyprith actually would seem really likely, save that I don't think she's currently writing fic. But IA that there aren't *that* many, and I wondered too. (And whoever it is, I probably read you so...sorry! Especially if you're Bad Faery, because you're pretty much the acknowledged Rumbelle god and I doubt there's ever any getting out from under that one.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, Cyprith hasn't written fic since like last August. She lost interest in Rumbelle pretty much, I think she's writing a little bit of Eowyn fic now but otherwise focusing on her original fiction.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's also like Marchie and TriplePirouette, though I'm not sure if the latter has done much lately.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, can anyone suggest some good Rumbelle fanfiction please? So far anything I've read reminded me of trashy romance novels, and if I have to read one more time about "flowing tresses" or "sparkling orbs" I might scream.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn. An automatic aversion to the word "tresses" means you should probably avoid Nym's "A Bed of Thorns," since the viewpoint character is a possibly slightly younger than canon Belle--and in Skin Deep (have you seen the show? That makes a difference to what I can rec) she was clutching a romance novel called "Her Handsome Hero.". (I'm the cosplayer blathering about cups upthread. I notice crap like this.) So the character does describe hair as tresses, but on the other hand, I don't recall seeing the word "orb" anywhere, certainly not to describe eyes. If I run into both at once I usually hit the back-button too. Anyway, I'd still give the fic a go, unless that's the one you were complaining about. But be warned, it's over 390,000 words and counting, so if you avoid long works or WIPs, it's probably not a good place to start.

I already recc'ed my favorite authors all over the last Once Upon a Time secret a couple days ago, but aside from Nym, my other two favorite authors are Fyre and Rufeepeach. Fyre's stuff tends to be less romance-novel-ish in general than a lot of Rumbelle fic. One of my favorites by her isn't exactly or entirely Rumbelle. It's called "Charmed Life." And it's awesome. The most romance-novel-like of her stories is "An Inward Treasure," so I'd avoid that one, especially as it's a Georgian AU that she's looking to publish as an actual romance novel. But she's written a lot of fic. Hopefully you'll find something you like.

Some of Rufeepeach's stuff, especially the non-magical AU stuff, has more romance tropes, although, again, haven't seen the word "orb" show up anywhere. "Wrapped Around a Spindle" is good and didn't remind me of a romance novel.

All three authors are on AO3 under Nym, Fyre, and Rufeepeach. Nym and Rufeepeach have the same tumblr handles, Fyre is Amuseoffyre.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Something about the Rumbelle ship must invite bad romance novel writing, because even the stuff that is recced a lot/BNF fic is rather like that, so finding good stuff can be struggle. Possibly because the romance novel types of stories get recced a lot, so people try to emulate those, and then you get a bunch of terrible, cheesy fics full of 'orbs' and 'tresses' and the like.

On AO3: Nym (although 'Bed of Thorns' is definitely chock full of romance novel tropes, it is well written), Luthien, Bad Faery, bayloriffic, indiefic, and seren_ccd are some of my favorites.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel better, nobody in real life gives a flaming crap.
