I'm not familiar with Kim and co. other than watching random episodes. What's the big secret?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Generally speaking if you admit to watching these or partaking in any non-fannish celebrity worship, actually, in fannish spaces, the response usually heavily implies that you're a shallow ONTD idiot.

any non-fannish celebrity worship

Huh, but at least KK is businesswoman worshipped for things she actually does rather than a character she plays. When you put it that way, I'll take a Kardashian fan over a Cumberpatch stan any day.

The Kardashian sisters are generally derided because they've made a career out of being shallow rich bitches who only care about shopping and dating and being pretty; their chief claim to fame is that their stepdad was an Olympian, their family was already wealthy, and the "prettiest" one used to hang out with Paris Hilton and had a sex tape.

They aren't good role models, generally-speaking, and OP is probably embarrassed to say one of them is an inspiration in any capacity.

(Personally I respect the shit out of their business savvy. They've made a LOT of money for basically just existing.)

Agreed on your last point, their business acumen and straight-up cunning is remarkable.

Don't forget that Robert Kardashian Sr was one of OJ Simpson's lawyers, though.

But does it really have anything to do with them having 'business savvy' and mostly just to do with the American tv-watching public having the most execrable taste imaginable? Unless i'm missing something, all they do is that reality show? That's not business savvy - that's friggin' prime-time, sadly, and hell - people who catch possums and snakes have that.

They own their boutique D-A-S-H and have released a number of clothing lines and at least four (maybe five?) perfumes. Oh, and they have a cosmetics line now.

A good lot of the show is actually about their business as well as their personal lives.

But would any of those things be successful without the show? And are they successful in reality, or will we all find out ten years later they were slowly going bankrupt from mismanagement and stuff?

I dunno. Seems like lots of people have a perfume, or a clothing line - like lots of people 'sing' and put out an album. Seems more like just trying to stay 'in the public eye' and have more stuff to flog in the hopes of making money than having any real special business talent.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they're not exactly Andrew Carnegie, I'll admit that. But the fact is that they've managed to sell their brand, whether it's physical or just the idea of Kardashians, for YEARS now, and people keep buying it. There are not many reality stars with that kind of lasting power, and the Kardashians remain because their mom Kris Jenner is promoting the hell out of them and working her ass off to keep them famous and in the public eye. If anything, she's the Andrew Carnegie, Kim's the face.

I personally just view it as a Great American Materialist Tale? They started out with Bruce's Olympian fame and Kim's settlement from the sex tape thing, minor B/C-list edges of fame, and now even people who don't care about this kind of thing know their names.

It's so amazingly creepy. I've caught bits of the show in late-night channel-scroll mode, and the mom seems to have no limit to what she'll do to push her kids into the public eye. So icky.

DASH definitely existed before the show, but I don't know about the rest.

And see, that must be a super-specific 'location' or 'crowd' thing, 'cause i've never heard of 'DASH' before.

My understanding is that there are only like...3 stores? [Also 'boutigue' generally means that it's not a huge chain, and more of a select small, upper scale type store - so the fact there are three is actually fairly impressive, and means their store has to be making some pretty good business.]
