I think you're missing out not watching A2A because it explains quite a bit about Gene and also Chris/Ray. I don't want to be spoilery but its worth it just for that imo.

And yeah Gene is a little different in A2A. But A2A is kinda different to LoM. I'm not sure I can say how its different, or how Gene is different without being spoilery. But if you really feel like the show would ruin Gene for you, there are always spoiler sites. You can find out what happened to everyone at the character entries for LoM on wikipedia.
