it is too bad that there's no sam but i grew to really like alex. you're missing out imo

I can promise you right now, Ashes To Ashes definitely will not disappoint.

I'm of the (unpopular?) opinion that Ashes to Ashes was better than Life on Mars. Alex Drake was a fantastic character and the third series of A2A was especially brilliant.

Nope, I'm right there with you. I liked them both but A2A was better. OP is missing out.

Alex is such a fantastic character. Based on the pilot I was iffy but I'm glad I eventually resumed watching, because S1 was gutpunch central, S2 was good and S3 was absolutely the height.

It's a different show tonally from LoM but still, very very good.

Even though I haven't watched it, I know how Ashes to Ashes ends. That makes me NOT want to watch it (I don't like where they went with it). I want more Gene, but I don't want to put that ending in my head as canon.

I fully admit that this is a stupid way to think. As if not watching it makes it less canon....

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't see the build-up, of course it's going to sound stupid. If I tell somebody who hasn't watched a single episode of LoM how it ends, they're gonna go "that sounds silly, I won't be watching that then!" most likely.

But if they actually watch the goddamn show, they'll be crying in the end.

Alex Drake>Sam Tyler tbh. Ashes to Ashes was a much more enjoyable series for me too, I think you're missing out.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Your loss, anon. Alex is amazing, Gene, Chris, and Ray all get better character development, and A2A is the better show.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ashes to Ashes was a chore to sit through. I wish I had stopped watching with Life on Mars as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ignore all the "A2A was better than LoM" bullshit. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I never grew to like Alex even a little bit but Gene more than made up for that. He's even more Gene Hunt in A2A than he was in LoM somehow. I'm sorry I waited so long to finally watch it.

I think you're missing out not watching A2A because it explains quite a bit about Gene and also Chris/Ray. I don't want to be spoilery but its worth it just for that imo.

And yeah Gene is a little different in A2A. But A2A is kinda different to LoM. I'm not sure I can say how its different, or how Gene is different without being spoilery. But if you really feel like the show would ruin Gene for you, there are always spoiler sites. You can find out what happened to everyone at the character entries for LoM on wikipedia.

I didn't want to watch it for a long time because I was going to miss Sam, and then I watched the first episode and had to take another break from the heartbreak. But when I did finally get around to watching it, it was worth it. Still so much heartbreak though, but I don't regret it.

Wow, f!s stepped into a timewarp to 2008!

Anyway, Ashes to Ashes is ok. Keeley Hawes is simply not as good an actor as John Simm, but she does improve over the series. I like S1 best of the 3, because the family connection is messed up in a really good way. Chris and Ray get a lot of good stuff to do, and Shaz is a welcome addition to the cast. As to Gene- Season 3 explains the world Alex and Sam wound up in, and you might not like it or want to keep it a mystery.

The move to London is kind of annoying to me- I've gone on before about how I feel Manchester was another supporting character in Life on Mars, but it's true! London just isn't the same. But I do like that they explore some paradoxical stuff that they didn't address at all in Life on Mars.

Watch it if you want to, but don't feel like you're obligated to.

[personal profile] starry_starrrz 2013-02-05 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I liked A2A, it's got a different feel to LoM but it's still really enjoyable. (Even if the fandom has nothing to offer a slash fangirl. *sad times*)

NGL, I refuse to accept it as LoM canon though. LoM is LoM, A2A is a fun 'what might have happened' spin off.

I might be too attached to LoM's open ending...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Truth is, you'll never know if it's a right thing for you. I mean, there's a lot of people who liked it (even more the LoM, which I, personally, find crazy), but the others never really got into A2A and/or never accepted it as a part of LoM universe.
Being of a second group, I'm tempted to say you're rightly avoiding it, but... well, objectively speaking, the sequel's not a bad show. The style's different, and it fucks up canon beyond any reason. They sort of, not to spoil anything, played with the Sam-not-being-there thing, and it really did fuck up massive chunks of canon.
But yeah, try an episode or two. If you don't like it, you can always delete it and pretend it doesn't exist.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't fuck up LoM canon, it builds on canon. Certainly there are a couple of things that become plotholes (happens with everything) in LoM but that's only the fault of the writers who didn't always have all the answers, just a vague idea of where they wanted to take A2A.

With that said, I agree it's not for everybody, as it's very much a different show in terms of tone and in some ways, in terms of characterization. I was just forced to become its biggest defender because of all the misogynist fuckwits that surfaced right after it came out.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-05 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say they were 'building on' canon, if back in 2006 the writers were thinking, "right. There's a rooftop scene, but in several years This and This will happen, and That's what really is going on here."
They clearly didn't. They didn't even plan to make A2A at first. In fact, if you try to apply A2A canon it terms of who the characters are, their role in general universe (like, you know, Nelson) to LoM, it just becomes confusing. Not to mention, I don't find that giving answers to something that's not meant to be answered is a good idea per se, especially if your answers are radical. And A2A answers are VERY radical.

I get what you're saying, the ending of A2A expands the universe of it's predecessor and changes the perspective on a lot of things happening in it. I just don't believe it's doing so in a way that complements LoM.

(There's also a small matter of the very-very last scene which underlines the significance of BOTH main protagonists, whichever's your favorite, and pisses me, personally, off.)

Oh, and, there was a misogynistic movement in fandom?! Really? Wow, that's... just wow.

[personal profile] little_birds_fly 2013-02-05 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefered the writing on LoM and the Gene Hunt Character was absolutely brilliant. With A2A though, I grew the biggest crush on him ever. Plus also it was set in a time when I was a teenager, so I suppose it got to me even more.

There is obviously no obligation OP - but I think A2A brilliantly compliments it and would be well worth your time :-)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you, anon. I couldn't get into Ashes to Ashes and quit after a couple of episodes.
