this kind of situation is what fanfiction is for. taking the writer's failures, then rewriting them.

Ignoring the fact that those of us who are fans of TBBT are F!S's punching bag....

I feel you, OP. I realized that I feel this way a little while ago and the Bakersfield Expedition episode and the last one really pissed me off because of it. Penny could be great partner for someone who's int fandomy stuff but they still have her ridiculing Leonard about it and I'm fed up with it :(

I always thought their relationship felt forced and wished she could just be friends with the guys. Why have to date one of them? Eh, I stopped watching a couple years ago anyway.

mte. i would have loved it if she ended up as part of the group because of her own self, not because of her relationship with leonard.

This. Leonard's dogged "I'll just do a ton of favors for her until she loves me" approach never sat well with me. She got along with all of them so well as friends, too.

yeah i think he kind of veered into Nice Guy territory a few times too.

I find Leonard's view and way of acting towards women, and specifically women he's romantically or sexually interested in, really repulsive. He's an okay character and then he turns into this needy whiney manipulative controlling ass. So yeah, I don't ship him with anyone. He's actually my least favorite character on that show.

But I also wish that Penny didn't have to be a love interest at all and could just be one of the gang.

"Controlling"? Sorry, Penny's the controlling one. Leonard's one of the few characters I actually have respect for (along with Howard, Bernadette and Stuart). Penny's an alcoholic witch, Raj is grating and faux-gay, Sheldon's an arrogant, egotistical, obnoxious, borderline emotionally-abusive ASSHOLE, and Amy's a controlling weirdo (seriously - I have had ENOUGH of her after the Bridezilla and Wil Wheaton incidents).

I agree with you except about howard. Seriously. Howard is one of those sleazy guy who'd take advantage of a drunk girl to get what he wants.

I'll admit, I liked them more the first time they were together. Now, not so much. Their treatment of each other (and their characters in general for the most part) is nauseating, they feel forced, and they're not making progress as a couple. I don't know why the writers out them back together at all.

I'd rather see Penny have another one night stand with Raj or something.

actually now i want this too, but especially if it was portrayed in a comedic way

I haven't watched BBT in a very long while but I was already getting annoyed with the characters and relationships on that show a while back.

I also really hate the "it's a comedy" excuse for poor writing, you CAN feel mad about the wasted potential OP. I understand not having character development is great for sitcoms in syndication, but that excuse gets tired when characters seem to be reliving the same plots over and over again and the characters start to all become unlikable.

Leonard is the projection of male nerds. He is plain and yet he gets to make out constantly with attractive women and bang most of them. And a couple of them want him to marry them.

Argh, I've never* liked this relationship because I can't stand Leonard. I don't find him nearly as sympathetic as I think he's intended to be. I think he's just another Nice Guy. Bleh.

Penny's cool though, I just wish she'd spend less time with/talking about Leonard and more time with everyone else.

*I've only been watching the show for the past half year or so, though, so my perspective is different; I didn't start watching with the early episodes.

No, he's been a Nice Guy the entire time. First episode he goes to get her TV from her ex because "it won't HURT" his chances of her sleeping with him. He steals her mail so he has an excuse to talk to her. He's super nice to her unless she's dating another guy, then he's a jackass. She was basically forced to apologize to him - when they weren't dating! - because she had a one night stand with Raj and HOW DARE YOU YOU ARE MEANT FOR LEONARD. He flipped out because she said she loves chili cheese fries but wasn't ready to say "I love you" to Leonard.

Leonard's consistently been my least favorite character on the show, from the first episode.

Okay, yeah, I just wasn't sure if it was different earlier on or not. Sounds like it wasn't.

One of the first episodes I ever saw was the one where they're not together anymore, but Penny is pretending they are because she doesn't want her dad to know they broke up or something, and Leonard takes advantage of this and basically forces kisses on her when she clearly doesn't want to kiss him. Blehhhch. That really colored my perception of him.

The writing is beyond terrible; it's the actors who make the show.

I stopped caring after mid season... 3 (I think?) and am now only watching it occasionally, but what killed it for me in the end was the "I could happen" in last weeks episode. I basically went "yeah, fuck you" and quit.

Ugh, those two never had an chemistry imo. Leonard strays too far into Nice Guy territory at times and his insecurity here lately has me wanting to claw his eyes out.
