So I'm finally watching Classic Who...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've wanted to start watching Classic Who for a long time now, and now I'm finally getting into it. However, there's a LOT of stuff there, and it's hard to judge the quality from the episode descriptions because of how old and stylistically different the show is. Plus, I want to jump around from era to era to familiarize myself with everything, not slog through it in order.

So, does anyone have recs for their favorite serials? I know everyone has different ideas, but any suggestions would be welcome!

I'm watching the episodes that are on Netflix (do you have that?) and so far I've watch "The Aztecs" with the first doctor and "The Mind Robber" with the 2nd. Both are awesome - though they're very different types of stories. The Aztecs is more history focused while the Mind Robber is a silly mind twisty bit of fun.

I really enjoy the first serial with the Daleks. So it's "An Unearthy Child", "The Daleks", and "The Dalek Invasion of Earth".

I actually enjoyed watching the 8th Doctor's movie.

I also liked The Five Doctors special.

I've always been rather fond of the first 4th Doctor serial, Robot.

Key to Time arc. That should keep you busy for awhile. XD

the anon above who's watching on Netflix - what annoys me is that Netflix actually has most of the serials in that arc... EXCEPT for the third and last serial... stupid Netflix. And then there's still more 4th Doctor serials.

Hmmm, personally I lovelovelove Genesis of the Daleks, one of Four and Sarah Jane's earlier ones with Harry Sullivan. It's one of those serials that tends to make you go "why did I love that so much?" when you haven't watched it in a while (because in many ways it's pretty simple) and then go "oh yeah THAT'S why I loved it so much" when you go and watch it again, because the execution is just that good.

I'm a big fan of the Two/Jamie/Zoe combo, a couple of my faves being The War Games, which is super-long but really epic and escalates beautifully, and The Mind Robber, which is complete and utter crack of the most audaciously insane and imaginative variety that RTD would be envious of.

Possibly my favorite Classic Who is from the last two seasons with Seven and Ace. I'd particularly recommend Remembrance of the Daleks and Battlefield for new viewers. Or Silver Nemesis, if you just want fun fluff. Or Ghost Light, if you want something really dark and character-driven, as long as you don't mind the fact half of it makes no sense.

"Robot" is my favorite serial so far. I just got started and haven't watched much of Classic Who either, but hnnnngh the fourth Doctor, I love him so! I was going to jump around too, but now I'm watching all Four's episodes in order. Hopelessly addicted. |D

Have fun, anon!

I LOVE THREE. Ahem. I should get that out of the way first, because my recs will be Three-heavy. I like to start people who are new to Classic Who with stories that introduce a new Doctor, new companion, or both. "Spearhead from Space" introduces Three, Liz, and some recurring UNIT characters. "Terror of the Autons" introduces Jo and the Master.

"The Time Monster" is CRACKTASTIC (seriously, what were they on because I want some). "The Sea Devils" is fun, and "The Three Doctors" is great for Petwee and Troughton snarking at each other. I like "The Green Death" a lot, but I'd recommend starting elsewhere and coming back to it after you've seen some other Jo stories. Similarly, "Inferno", one of the darkest serials. It's great, but don't start with it.

Other- "The Aztecs", "The Romans", "The Mind Robber" (also cracktastic), "Robot", "City of Death", "The Five Doctors", "Mark of the Rani", "Battlefield", "Remembrance of the Daleks".

It doesn't hurt to try the very first episode, An Unearthly Child. You don't really have to finish the rest of the kinda boring serial, but it's a nice intro to Ian and Barbara and you can see the origins of a lot of trademarks there.

There's also The Mind Robber, from Two's era with Jamie and Zoe. The entire script is powered by about a blizzard's worth of cocaine from start to finish, and it is so much fun. And I desperately want the TARDIS to get stranded there again sometime in nuWho.

From a New Who perspective, you might like Ghost Light, from Seven and Ace's era. The plot is...bizarre, to say the least, but it has a lot of focus on the Doctor-companion personal relationship and lots of character-motivation and background stuff for Ace, which are things Old Who tends to skimp on.

Oh, and Battlefield! Futuristic semi-steampunk alternate-universe Arthurian knights invading our universe to fight over Excaliber, with The Big Bang-level timey-wimey fuckery and UNIT being epic and the Brigadier coming out of retirement to kick some ass. Really, Seven's later era in general is a really nice transition from New to Old Who.

Terror of the Autons is from Three's era, and introduces both Jo Grant and the Master, which might interest you a lot from a backstory perspective after seeing the nu!Who Master.

You may or may not love City of Death. On the one hand, it's hilarious and features Four and Romana II romping around Paris and acting like they're about to rip off their clothes and start getting it on in the middle of the street. On the other hand, it's slooooooowwwwwww, especially near the beginning.
